Stella 5000 with 6000 spool

Hello Gents

I have a stella 5000 sw. It is a great little reel but I would like to speed it up a little as I use it with fast straight running lures. My question is with regards the 6000 spool that fits on the 5000. Is the outer diameter of the 6k spool greater than the outer diameter of the 5k spool thus increasing the line retrieve per crank of ge handle. Or is the increased capacity of this spool due to the decrease in size of the inner diameter of the spool?

Anton, I would suggest that whatever difference there is, if any, would be so marginal that it isn't going to make much difference,

Anton the Stella 5000 is what you would class as a high speed reel with a gear ratio of 6.2 that's 102cm per crank on retrieve. If you want to speed up the retrieve you will just have to wind faster. For a reel of this size 5000 you ain't going to get any better.

Hi Anton. i got a 6000 HG spool from japan for my 5000SW  you can  get them in the PG and HG. by the sound off what you need is the 6000 HG... its great with that spool on it..

My understand is that as the gears of the reel are inside the reel body a aftermarket 6000  PG or HG spool is not going to make the reel faster or slower?

Correct Craig. The label on the spool should not make a difference.

Anton, I do not think there is a faster reel in its class on the market than an SW5000.  A gear ratio of 6.2 is already very fast.

Larger spool diameter= more line retrieve, however as Brandon said it will be that close it won't be noticeable. Its going to be in the millimeters.

Anton, I own a twinpower SW with both 5000 and 6000 spools (same gear ratio 6.2:1).

The 5000 spool measures 53mm across the lip, whilst the 6000 measures 56 mm.  If you could fill the spool to the lip (which you cannot) the 6000 would retrieve 109 cm per crank and the 5000 103 cm per crank (using a little bit of Y2 maths).  That's what the numbers say!

In reality, like you, I thought the 5000 was a little slow (its probably retreiving more like 95 cm) and reach for the 6000 spool whenever I require a little speed.  The difference is noticeable, but as the numbers suggest - not huge.

If you are working your lure "walk the dog" style and using a long rod (8' plus) the 6000 spool does deliver a discernible advantage.  And it does deliver a noticeable increase in casting distance.

At worst, having an extra spool allows for a spare pre-tied FG knot........just in case, you happen to have a bust off on the other!

The reason for my question is this. Once I have caught a few fish on heavier tackle I always like to scale down a bit to try and increase the skill factor required in landed fish. I have bigger Stellas (8000sw, 10000sw and 10000fa with various aftermarket spools). I do a fair amount of land based spinning over here in SA with our average size fish in the 6- 10kg class. I have a 10ft Yamaga paired with the 5000 SW which is a fantastic set up. The only slight hiccup is that I have been very successful with a green teflon 15mm x 15mm surface plug. This lures requires speed to to make it work and my feeling is that this speed is what has led to my increased strike rate. At present I am not able to get the action that I would like out of this lure due to the limited line retrieve per crank of the 5000sw. My thinking was simple - if I could increase the outer diameter of the spool I would increase the line retrieved per crank and my 'problem' would be solved.

From the feedback the I have received it seems that my solution is going to be moving to a slightly broader and thus slower lure - 18mm x 15mm it will have to be.

Once again thank you very much for your responses. I thought that I may give myself an excuse to source and acquire more tackle

In light of my second post - which gives more background information - would you recommend the second spool. For interest sake - does the 6000 Twinpower spool fit on the 5000 Stella. Could save me a few pennies?

All Twinpower SW and Stella SW spools within the same sizes are interchangeable Anton.  And they are 100% identical bar the livery.  So if you can find a Twinpower SW spool cheaper than its Stella SW equivalent, buy it!

For example I use a Twinpower 12000 on my Stella 10000 all the time.

Anton, yes the Twinpower SW and Stella SW spools are interchangable (same on all sizes 5000 / 6000 and the 8000 / 10000 / 12000).  If you can get the 6000 spool at a decent price, grab it! 

I note they are often out of proportion with their pricing, seems a 6000 spool is worth more than a 10000 at most places!

As I said, the difference is noticable bot not huge - it could be just what you need though if you are that close to getting your plug working.

I note that SOM do a spool for the 6000, but haven't used it or measured it though!
