Bermagui Bluefin 2nd June 2012
June 04, 2012, 11:27:03 AM
Hi Guys,

Returned from Bermi last night after an amazingly hot bluefin bite.

In all we landed 16-18 fish all around the 30-40kg mark - most closer to 30.

We released a stack of fish also and it seemed the later in the day it got, the bigger the fish.

Fish were caught trolling bibbed minnows, on jigs, on cubes; but most excitingly for me on stickbait.

I was using the Carpenter Pandora 155 and Nomad Ulua 150 - all of the strikes were on the pandora sunk to around 60 feet? (basically let it sink for a minute or so).

We didn't get as many pics as I'd like - the action was too got to stop for!

We fished south of the port.

Some pics for you all.

Cheers!
Dan

Excellent stuff Daniel!  Some really solid fish there.

On the depth of the stickbait, unless the water was almost current-less, I suspect you were not as deep as you imagined.  That lure will not sink at that rate if the current gets hold of it.

I have heard that there are some really big ones out there at the moment. Any evidence of that from you guys with bust offs of bigger fish?

the current was virtually non existent. I reckon it was about that, but hey who knows!

i was casting off the bow and saw a huge explosion about 500 meters off the bow as we were drifting. I didn't actually see what caused it, but one may suspect a big blue marlin feeding on some of these guys.

There were no big fish bust-off's, but the later the day got, the bigger the fish became.

Well done Daniel,
You guys where on the charter boat out at the 45 line.
One of the lucky few that found the fish.
There are some big fish mixed in with the school sized. The boat aquaholic had a seven way hook up to land one of 50kg but speaking to the skipper he saw a fish take the right rigger and was twice the size.
Our big fish generally start to show around the end of june the week before the full moon should be ripe
I will be fishing the long weekend after this blow and will let you know how we go.

Hi Harley,

thanks mate - what do you mean by the 45 line? 4500fa?

I'm deadset DYING to get back down there, but fear I may have used up my fishing privileges this season - as am off to europe at the end of the month.

If I wouldn't get dumped (by the mrs), I'd be there this coming weekend.

Bermagui is 36.25 and 150.05 so the 45 line would be 150.45
Heard today that a longliner got 10 fish above 120kg cleaned.
Luke there is a spot on the boat this weekend if you bring a few of those popping rods for me to try its to hard to get to feel the good sticks from the south coast

Whent out on sunday for a 5way hookup even had them feeding @ the back of the boat untill the boat was mooved by the skipper still arguing with him over that.
Anyhow the fish sounded and we could not find them again.
Another boat found them and tagged 10 kept 2 to 78kg.
They are wide @ the 151.11 36.04 thats about 120ks from bermi They are also wide of Jb and ulladulla on the 151 line in numbers. I just recieved the oil of a mate that works as an observer  for aftma on the longliners. The longliner fishing on these northern marks have also been getting alot of 40kg bigeye and yfin mixed in with the bluefin about 20% of the bluefin have been 80kg+.
Sorry no pics as they get gilled gutted and iced strait away
If you need a charter from bermi Wobs on hotshot is the go. I think it is about 2k for the day

thanks for the update Harley - sounds like you were definitely one of the lucky ones. fingers crossed that they decide to make a 60km run west over the next few days... got a few mates out there after them Sat/Sun... it's certainly exciting to see the numberes - and sizes build.

cant believe the skipper left the fish - would have been dirty as!

Cheers

The longliners got them in at the 33 line today 1 trailer boat had one on for about 5hours and broke off at the leader estimate 150kg these boys have caught the portland barrels to 120kg before.
Daniel the skipper spun the boat because the line was running underneath like you would on a marlin. But you cant do this with tuna as it puts them off and breaks your cube trail
