Rod to match Stella 10000??
April 08, 2008, 02:27:09 PM
Hey guys,

I just got myself a new stella 10000 (Looks like its something of the shuttle...beautiful!) and am now wanting to match it with a new rod, and have read a few post about it, but still not sure. i want a rod i can use both from a boat and the shore, so i guess casting distance is important, but will be fishing in the seychelles later this year, so its needs to be powerful for the big fish out there. Any suggestions what i should get? My budget is around 6-700AUS.

Any advice much appreciated!

Presuming you will be loading either 5 or 6 PE for 300 to 270m of line respectively, maybe too big a presumption :P

You have a top of the line reel!!!

Have you looked by chance at the carpenter 'coral viper' CV79/35RF or CV79/40RF new model Carpenter rods would fit the spec but the budget has blown ever so slightly, you can get these for another couple of hundred AUD from the US.

I'm about to put one on my Z6000GT loaded with PE6 varivas, don't tell the wife.

Hi Andrew. You could try HOTS Gipang and go for the 75XXH which is rated to PE 12. Andrew Wooley Page who is a member on this forum has the Australian distribution rights for HOTS so you could send him a PM.

Thanks for the replies guys

I am planning to put one spool of 50lbs braid, and then a 20000 spool with 80lbs braid on it, so i guess its pretty heavy gear i am looking for??

Simon,

This is the 2008 stella? If so can you put the 20k spool on the 10k body??

Pardon my question if this has been answered elsewhere in the forum already.

I think it also important to look at what you like to throw out there i.e big-cup poppers or stick baits as often a particular rod is better suited to one or the other.

Sorry to answer your question with more.

Andy

Hey Andy

No probs, I enjoy mainly popper fishing, so its def going to be the bigger poppers. It is a 2008 stella, and I have been told it will take a 20000 spool, but havnt actually tried it,

20k and 10k are not interchangeable on the 08 SW Stella.

Ah ok thanks Luke, I guess then i will be switching between 2 10k spools then, but still intend using 50 and 80 lbs line...

After field testing the whole SW range the 10000 is a perfect 50/80lb reel IMO.

I have only heard good things about it, and very glad to have taken the plunge. I have been browsing the web a bit, and like the look of the Zenaq, what will be more suited to shore and boat casting, the 7"6 model, or the 8'3, bearing in mind the line will be 50-80lbs?

Simon,

I'll be very keen to hear how your combo works out as I've also just purchased a zenaq 80-3 tuna casting rod and can't wait to try it out on.

Luke, I have been waiting to see what the cross compatibility is between the new stella's spools and 10, 18 and 20k bodies, is there any as in the previous models?? if this has already been discussed here maybe a link then.

Thanks
Andy

Andy, ther can be no way the new 08 10000 can be compatible with the 18000 or 20000. The reels are of a different size in the first place.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Thanks Brandon, I should of made the question clearer, it was more aimed at the 18 and 20k models, it is getting a bit academic now anyway.

Bottom line for me is that the 10k looks like a nice light 6-8 PE reel at 625gm, significantly lighter than the Z6000GT 815gm I have set-up for this same welter-weight popping purpose. Anyone want to buy a brand new Z600GT :P.

20k and 10k are not interchangeable on the 08 SW Stella.

Simon, the Zenaq FC 83-5 seems very popular in the US and would suit the new reel and is rated PE 5-7,I looked at one last Xmas and was very impressed.I have the FC 83-7 and have no problem casting and working from a boat and it is great casting from the shore, with its moderate fast taper it can work stickbaits and poppers to about 150gms with a moderate size cup.
