Pe5 outfit
December 26, 2012, 07:46:42 PM
Hi everyone, long time no see but I have a question.

I'm chasin a PE5 outfit.  Mainly for 60-100gm lure work over shallow reef areas, poppers, sticks, sps etc.  Looking at the daiwa cb77s-f with the saltiga 4500.  Does anyone have reviews on this combo? Also what other rods can you recommend in this range?

Meh - budget, +$700 for rod begins to scare me off.  Reels well it's only Stella or saltiga there so we all know the price for them.

For my PE5 outfit i go for Carpenter TBL80/30RF-SHP and Hots Gipang 78MH.
As for reels, the old Saltiga Z4500H and 2010 Saltiga 5000H.

Travis,

I've been looking at the Carpenter TBL 80/30 although it's over your budget (about $900-$1000) and have yet to use one. Quite a few of the guys that fish in this part of the world (Oman) use the Hots 711mh teamed with an SW10,000 for their medium weight gear. It's a very nice combination particularly for the $ and has landed some very big fish (admittedly on PE6).

Regards,

Trevor

G'day Travis,

Have a look at the Temple Reef STK 76H PE4-6 casts 60-120gm & weighs only 285gms for $500 AUD.

Elite Tackle has these and when I was up on the Gold Coast last week I had a feel of one, really nice stick and very well built.

I am actually considering the slightly heavier STK 78HH myself.

Cheers,

Ian

I was going to suggest the temple reef....i got a bd 100 for working stickbaits up to 130 gms....it works a treat...it is longer at 8'8 but i use it from the shore where the length is necessary.

On a recent trip to the montebello islands I used a Wilson venom pe5 popper rod and I was very impressed with it, I used it with a 8000 twin power and pe5 jerry brown.
While the rod did struggle with poppers over 100g when it came to blooping them but it cast like a rocket and was well suited to stick baits up to 120g.
When it came to fighting the fish it was excellent with a pronounced parabolic action and I knocked over a number of mackerel to 20kgs and Gt's to 15kgs in some pretty tight water.
I think they are around that $500 mark and Australian made the only thing I didn't like was the join being about 6in above the foregrip.

Carpenter BC75MHS if you prefer shorter rod ( rated PE 4-5 ) or Carpenter HL TN87 if you prefer longer rod ( rated PE 5-6 ) . Both rods are very popular among GT n Tuna fishermen casting sub 100 gr.lures .

G'Day Travis

I have the Daiwa Casting Bluebacker 77S-F with the Saltiga-Z 4500H and use it in Sydney Harbour chasing Yellowtail Kingfish. I use 80g pencil poppers and the combo has knocked over kings to 85cm with ease. Its a really nice combo.

Cheers Rob

Hello Travis,

I use a Yamaga blanks Blue Sniper 80'5 with a Stella 8000 with varivas PE 5.
Very nice light rod. Cast very well.

I catched a few nice Jack crevalles and Roosterfish with it.

Best regards,

Arnout.

Travis, I haven't used the 77s-f yet, but the 80TN would suit your brief nicely, I've been using one for many years in that weight range.

I've also owned and widely used the Stealth 76H and found it to be a nice popping rod in that range, but I reckon the tip is a little too stiff for stickbaits.
