February 01, 2013, 12:54:34 PM
Hi guys. I need a bit of help with assist hooks on jigs for doggies. What chord is best to use and where do i get it from, bear in mind i dont want to spend a lot of money as its already expensive enough losing 30 jigs a day.

Losing 30 jigs a day?  What are you doing?!!!

For assist cord, I think Kevlar is the cheapest viable solution.  You should find kevlar cord available at any decent tackle store that caters for customers who jig.

Here is an example for you Dylan http://www.fishhead.com.au/store/products/Varivas-SS-Assist.html

Please do not think that it will stop bite offs though. Nothing will bar wired or chain linked assists and usually they do not work very well.

thanks Mark. what poundage do you recommend. i will be doubling the chord, tying it too the hook, then looping it onto a solid ring. We were using wire to prevent bite offs but not only did it kink and break, it also caught a heap of sharks. from now on i dont mind loosing hooks instead of catching sharks.

Size 50 should be big enough.

Dylan, if you are losing thirty jigs, the cost of the hooks should be the least of your problems!!  ;D

A Mustad 14/0 and 4 metres of 600lb cable!

You might not catch many doggies but you'll stop losing your jigs (maybe)

Oh, and a flying gaff

And then the cost of leader, hook, swivel, solid ring and split ring!

There must be a hell of lot of sharks where you fish!
