Hots Gipang Tide Lex 7'11 mh
September 13, 2013, 05:08:28 PM
Looking at a PE 6 rod for stick baiting the usual suspects, including kings in Sydney and NZ (upcoming Ranfurly banks trip, and as a step down in lure weights from my FCL 81 Extreme which covers 120gm up) . Can anyone advise on what the ideal lure weight range is for this rod? Essentially looking for a rod to throw lures in the 60-100 gram territory with say 60-80gm perfect for most application.
Will probably run a Stella 6K or 10k on it.  Any other suggestions is always welcome in the 7.5' -8' range.

ps due to cost I am probably discounting the much admired Carpenter BLC range.

Regards,

Wayne

I have a BLC 83/35 and we did a side by side comparison of that and the Hots 711MH.

Apart from the obvious 4 inches extra in length it has a very similar profile. I think 80g would be doable but 60g with PE6 might be a struggle. In my opinion it would balance better with the 10000.

The 711MH is a very strong rod. I've seen good sized GTs hooked and landed on one using PE6, admittedly in the hands of an expert.

Trevor

That's great feedback. The hots sounds like a good rod to fill the gap over a 60-80gm rod and the fcl 81 ext I use for 120gm up. Now to justify the acquisition of two rods.

I have one and like it a lot it's my go to rod for smaller lures I find its sweet spot with lures in the 60 to 100gr range with 80 being optimum its set up with a 10k stella and PE6 and is a lot of fun to fish with.

Hiya Wayne  :),

Hope all is well.

Yes, the Hots 711MH with the K guides is a very strong rod matched with a Stella 10000 and PE 6 & casts lure weights between 50 - 100g with ease with 80g being the optimum and a pleasure to use for long periods too. I have this same set up and also fish the local waters of Sydney.......which is your local to Wayne.

Others have mentioned this Hots rod as well with good feed back here. Go to Nick Bowles fishing report recently and see what the Hots 711MH caught with it's class, power & action, simply strong indeed.

Take care and well see you in the local place for a rod loading up test Wayne soon  ;D.

Tight Lines !.

Leo

Thanks Leo, I have read all the posts including Nicks. The Hot's sounds like a great rod but the question was really around ideal lure weight range as this was not stated. If it can throw 60-100gm's it is certainly in the mix.  I fish Sydney as well Leo. Thanks again for the comments.

Wayne, worth having a look at Yamaga Blanks Blue Sniper range.

The 76/5 or 82/5 would seem to right for your brief. I really like this range of rods and have used the 82/5 with 60 gram lures (unrigged). Casts beautifully. I have not even held a 76/5 so can't comment on that one. This is a really fine range of rods though.

Hi Wayne, I echo the sentiments of Cameron and Trevor, Stella 8/10K and pe6.
I use it primarily with 90/100g sticks rigged  with 3'0 ST66 hooks, as well as covering the lighter end of the popper range. It will handle a Halco Roosta 195 and ST66 4'o hooks no problem, have used a 125g Cubera at times, but wouldn't go any bigger. I would suggest 80-110 as the optimum , having not thrown anything lighter than 90
Can handle monster GTs in the right hands as Tevor alluded to, yet is light and versatile enogh to use all day.
Hope this is of some benefit.

Good luck with whatever you choose.
Regards Rob

Rob thank you, the overall feedback confirms that this is a good rod and a pretty good option as a medium GT outfit. It will stay on the list for when I get around to an Oman trip which is planned for next year. My needs now however are really in that 60-80gram range which what I use primarily in Sydney for topwater Kings and smaller YFT.

Mark/Trevor always appreciate your feedback given your extensive combined experience, I have only heard good things about the Blue Sniper range but getting a 76/5  in Sydney is proving difficult (I have seen the 74/4 but to light me thinks). 7'6 is just about perfect for using of my little stabicraft as well.

Looks like rods that would suit would include: Blue Sniper 76/5 and possibly rods like the Zenaq Fokeeto Hiramasa 80-6, Saliga s-extreme 80tn, Tenryu Spike Yellowtail and Varivas Violente Offshore 77/8 or 77/10.  (again primarily a stick bait  rather than a popping rod).

Hi Wayne,

Probably could add the Synit stickbait rod to this list, think it's called a topshot razar or something. PE 4-6. Bit long at 8'3" though.
Interested to see what you end up with!

Cheers Dave

Thanks David, yes a bit long. Looking to see if I can source a Blue Sniper 76/5 otherwise I am leaning towards the Tenryu Spike yellowtail I think.
