Maldivian Fishing / Surf trip SOON !!!

(1/2) > >>

Dick Sweeney:
So my trip is coming up soon ... I'll be on a live aboard near the surfbreaks - as surfing will be very much part of the trip. Bearing this in mind will the fish be close to the white water and breaking reef or will they be in more open ocean areas (but with structure below). I ask this as I do have access to a smaller boat... but before I go on a vast journey away from the white water breaks... should I be casting close to this area as a good starting point.

Thanks

Dick Sweeney

David Sharples:
We found that the fish were in the white water. When casting from the big dhoni you had to cast far to get your popper as close to the surf as possible. So you should be able to surf and fish GTs in the same areas. Only thing was that there are definately more on some attols than others so try research first!

Dick Sweeney:
Thanks David for the info - much appreciated....... unfortunatley there will be 10 surfers and one who will be wetting a line... so I feel that surfing breaks will come first in a democratic live aboard... I'll adapt to whats there....

So did you encounter doggies in a the similar areas..... in fact would most of the other fish species be targeted closer to the white water...

David Sharples:
We didn't get any doggies by popping but the other groups have found them in the same areas as the GTs. So you should be OK.

Also for jigging the boat didn't need to find fish on the sounder, they just found a depth of +/-100m off the drop off then drift along. Found plenty of fish this way.

Take a light outfit as well as there are a lot of good bluefins and other trevallies in the surf if the GTs won't eat.

Dick Sweeney:
More good advice from there... so thanks David. Ive heard that squid live there - did you see / catch any ???
