Other alternative for SP80M
March 06, 2013, 09:35:09 PM
I m looking for a dedicated chugger rod for 100-130g popper(C Cup, FCL EbiExt, Seafrog 120). Had a hard time looking for the later batch SP80M. What's the next closes Carp rod that handle these size popper perfectly. Will be using PE6 line. Used to own a CV79/40 but sold away. Preferred 8ft or longer rod as I need to cast far.
I currently have a TBL83/32 for stickbait. Anyone who has the later batch SP80M and wanna let go can PM me.

Thanks

PE6 is tough I think, as for me I find most Carpenter PE6-8 GT rods lean more towards PE8. For example, Super Popping 80M is for me more of a PE8 rod.  That's all fair enough as I guess PE6 is not used that often for GT fishing.

For the lures you mention, DJ83MH would be a good call but not with PE6.

EP82/38 will be great with the lures but is more of a PE8 rod I think.

EP85/36 might be the one.

Also James, I would suggest you do not necessarily assume that a longer rod will cast further. Sometimes that is not the case and a lot depends on the nature of the blank and how you cast. For example, I think I can cast Coral Viper 79/40 as far as I can SP80M.

Thanks for the info Mark.

Between CV and EP82/38, which is stiffer and chug more efficient?

James,

You really should look at LR88 (I love it)... :)

"Cast a mile" and can handle the specifications you mencioned (PE6 and 100-130gr poppers)...

Best,

I would say it is very close but CV79/40 is probably a little more stiff.  Either would easily work chuggers of the size you mention.

Hi James

The CV 79/40 is stiffer then the EP 82/38 ... The CV is a much better popping rod than the EP
in my opinion ( I own both)

Yaniv ,

I am 63 year old and EP suits me better but I can understand why you prefer CV because you are a much younger person n possibly bigger physique than I to start with .

EP is designed for older anglers , the field tester for EP rods is a 60+ year old gentleman .

Is the LR88 physical demanding for small size anglers during fighting of fish?

James, the LR88 is pretty forgiving BUT over a long fight, it's length is going to hurt, especially if the fish sounds and decides to slug it out under the boat. If that happens, oh boy .............  :'(
If it swims; I want to catch it!

I like both rods very much. I just said that the CV is a bit stiffer rod
Then the EP
