fixed spool v's multiplier
Doug Terry:
Over on this side of the pond ( England) there is a debate going on regarding Fixed spool(Eggbeater) v's Muliplier(overhead) reels.
I know from reading this site that the majority of you use fixed spool reels ie Stellas and twinpowers.
Have any of you guys used Mulipliers for you fishing. why don't you use a multiplier for GT fishing.
I would add that I use a Twinpower 12000hg for gt fishing and a okuma muliplier for trolling out to the reef in Aitutaki.
James Crichton:
Hey Doug, which side of the pond is that? I haven't heard these
Brandon Khoo:
I think the reality is that spinning reels have advanced so far over the past decade or so that there just isn't a need to deal with the intricacies of casting with a heavy multiplier and the risk of backlash. I don't really see the point in trying to cast a multiplier hard into a 30 knot wind when a spinning reel is so much easier to use. I know that Fisherman actually used to make a popping rod for a multiplier years ago.
David Noble:
Agree with Brandon. Although it's really something seeing skilled guys cast an overhead reel for outright distance, which has it's following in surfcasting and off the stones. Whhhhiiiizzzzzzzzzz
I think for distance you sacrifice the level wind on o/h reels so would laying braid line manually be the cause of a few problems when GT fishing? A spin reel is simple and quick to deliver under pressure & in the moment.
Kinda regret getting rid of my baitcasters and that feeling of belting out smooth casts. (still have my dads Penn Squidder & a Daiwa SLX20SHV) which come out on the kayak occasionally.
Cheers Dave
Doug Terry:
Sorry James forgot to mention England now modified
