Jigging with ET
February 13, 2009, 01:30:34 PM
Sat feb 14 4:00pm on Channel 10, Escape with ET will feature the Capricorn Coast.

There's a bit of jigging footage, but it was one of our worst days jigging and we had to borrow the Marina's boat as ours were all booked. The footage around the Keppels is on our Voyager cats. Should be some nice reef fish footage and I think most were on soft plastics.

Daughter Molly caught a nice Golden Trevally on 6kg braid in the Keppels, anyway we'll see if they make us locals look good!!

Graham,

I caught the show on the weekend, and am getting very fired up to finalise our dates for the week at the end of Sept.  We have a keen group but need to finalise a couple of details.  Whilst we will mostly be lure casting for fingermark, barra, trout etc I hope to get in a bit of jigging (and popping for GTs), as the rest of the guys haven't done this before it will be good to see what they think.  How big do the AJs get up there?  The one on the show was a bit of a pup, but as with everything if you use the right tackle all fish are fun!!!  I just want to put a serious curve in my new Ripple Fisher Amberjack 55......

Do you know when the reef closure dates are for 2009?  I have searched the internet to no avail unfortunately.

Catchya,
Simon

Hi Simon,
The AJ's up this way are around 6kg I guess. I have caught one monster around 40kg. They are more offshore than up the coast. There are a few species that will put a bend in that rod. I think Andrew went out on the weekend. The boys caught a lot of nannygai, some trevally, a cobia, 6 or so big queenies on poppers, apparently 30 fish following the popper...no GT's spotted, but didn't fish for them really. I was at home due to birthday parties. I'll send some details via email.

cheers,
graham

Hi Graham,

What a great show, with some wonderful footage of you and Molly and your boats. Molly certainly looked comfortable landing those nice fish (even with ET telling her what to do!!) and the barramundi cod was a highlight for me. I think there was a quick shot of Cape Manifold and Manifold Island when the camera panned past 5 Rocks. The show gave a good account of the waters off Yeppoon. I can't wait to get back ... maybe in April.

Graham,

Andrew did get out on the weekend, and said they got some really nice nannies which he was pretty happy with.  He tried some jigging but only succeeded in having the small macks bite him off a couple of times.  It was good that he got out as he now has a heap of questions for Ginny.....

Gday Simon,
I think I met Andrew when they returned but didn't put 2 and 2 together. Because there was a risk of major NW winds I sent them along the coast. That's not where we do most of our jigging, but a good option for good reefies. Did you talk to anyone on the other boat, they stopped on 1 of the headlands after Andrew's boat left as didn't have as many fish. I think they caught 6 big queenies (mostly released) and said they had up to 30 fish after the poppers.
Genuine knife jig stuff doesn't work so well in close, however SP's do work well. There is about 40 miles between the GT popping stuff, and deep water jigging. I would suggest GT's and exploring the inshore would be more fun.
I get a bit sick of jigging after a couple of hours, whereas I love the lucky dip of species along the coast.

cheers,
graham
