mick rodgers

hello all new to site,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any heavy duty spins / popper rods  (15-24kg) that are 2 piece that break into sections under five foot besides blue water t curve (7' 6" ). Price range around $300-600?

End of short version

Thanks

Start of Long version (reasons why)

Going on holiday (samoa),

Mainly for surfing but also planning on trying poppering for GT's or anything else that will eat poppers, lures etc . Perhaps tuna.

I have already invested in a five foot twin barrel rod tube for previous hol. (2 * 9cm diameter rod tubes joined together in cloth from aussie company).

I picked five foot as the tube length to match a short stroker trolling rod I use. I kind of like the length as you can normally fit it in most cars - somehow.

Had made a decsion that all travel rods bought from now on must split into 5 foot sections or less.  Have a variety of rods to take that do fit (inculding t curve blue water spin stick 7 ft  6inch which is the closest thing I have to a popper rod)

Diawa put out a gt rod at 7 foot six with a removable butt section (Saltiga SG Muramura 76) but I can't find out how long the blank (top section ) is off the net and doubt my local stocks it to check. May have to track one down.

Anyway - back to original q - any suggestions for a heavy duty 2 piece spin/popper rod that breaks into  sections of 5 ft or less? Think I picked a rod tube length that was about 6 inches too short to fit most popper rods in. Doh. Know that may be a solution buy a 5 ft 6 inch rod tube but seems a bit of a waste.

many thanks

Hi Mick, you might be limiting yourself just a bit too much with a 5 foot rod tube, with a 6 foot tube giving you much more flexibility. I just measured my Saltiga SG Muramura 76 ... 1720 mm blank plus 673 mm grip / butt. If you can afford and justify the cost, but a Smith WRC-Tokara 60 or Komodo Dragon might be the way to go with a slightly shorter blank length and greater fire power. Both rods are both 7'6" long with a blank length of 1620 mm I believe. Matt

Mick I travel with alot of rods when I go on surf trips.

do you have a board coffin or just individual board bags? most coffins are 7'plus and will protect your rods pretty well. I also wrap mine up in towels for extra precaution.

If they can handle the domestic indonesian airlines without any damage you should be alright.

You might try the Souls True Excaliber--it is a tuna rod and comes in a heavy and an extra-heavy version--might be too long and too light for GT rod.  But it splits into two 4 1/2 foot sections with a very strong spigot ferrule.  I have one but have not caught a yellow fin on it yet.

 G'day Mick

Komodo and Tokara about 5'4" when split.
ARM GT Cannon 4'2" and probably one of the few much under 5'
