GoPro - Head Mount or Chest Mount?
December 27, 2013, 12:22:50 PM
Hey Guys,

Have seen a couple of threads on here about pro's and con's or each, just want to get the general consensus as to which is best for GT popping? the chest mount or the head mount, looking at buying one and basically want to narrow it down. Thanks in advance.

Hi Allister,

I have used a chest mount and looking at the footage after this it's not good. Being lower down and often obstructed by arms etc. Also every bump of your body you notice. A head mount would be more stable & would provide better quality.

The caveat is, any stills shots of people wearing GoPro head mounts tend to make the wearer look ridiculous.  ;)

I've used a rod mount / clamp and this is worst (sound of braid transmitted through the runners & dizzy footage with horizon always moving).
I've also tied the leader to the GoPro and cast it out into a school of fish! It sinks only slowly face down and gives a great view of the fish below.
Then upon retrieve it is wobbly & sounds crap.

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. I was thinking that the head strp/mount might be the best option. I sometimes like seeing the video's of the reel and arms of the guy fighting the fish but like you said I think you get better video's with the head strp so will give this a go and get one ordered. appreciate the feedback. Hopefully be able to post a few videos soon after I got a gopro for xmas, pumped.

Allister,

Stick away from body mount yes you might get the full strike but miss the fight action of your self slipping on the deck getting near pulled over the side by the strike etc.. ;D
Mount to boat with the fish eye you get 120 degrease so position your self in the last quarter ocean in the remainder.
Various alligator clamps with adjustable supports and extensions to purchase.
Its all about the memory's of past trips to g you up for future trips good luck.

Cheers Tony.

Even better if you wear one and get your mate to hold another one on a pole - best of both worlds!

Yeah that would be the go, I will have a look at trying to mount it at the back of the boat raised off the bait board which should give it some extra height. I noticed shane clark has made some great videos this way! I will have to check out the options there are to do that, and maybe have a lanyard attached so it doesn't go in the drink. Still sorting out the recording and battery life, may need to take out a few batteries and memory cards. Hopefully have some footage in the next couple of months, editing may be a big dodgy. Cheers for the feedback.
