A short and sweet report.
A few weeks ago, some mates and I towed the boat up to central Queensland to fish the building tides of the Full Moon on the 17th. We packed some swags, plenty of rum and fuel and a huge cache of gear!
You've got to love a bit of messy water, plenty of pressure waves and standing water to make things interesting. Exactly the conditions we wanted, albeit very challenging in a trailer boat with limited fuel supply.
In summary, the conditions we toiled didn't really live up to expectation for the areas we were hunting in.
I was lucky enough to score a few fish by changing techniques. I lost a Fisherman Long-Pen 100 to a pack of GTs, which ended up breaking the PE by another fish or tail scute. I immediately grabbed my other outfit and fished a Gamma 160 like a skittering pencil - rod-tip high. It worked!
The main run of the tides and current really didn't yield any spectacular results, instead plenty of Bludger trevally and the odd Mackerel. Amr also nailed a dinosaur-sized Barracuda of 30kg plus, boy are those things a baitfishes worst nightmare. Luckily, we did retrieve the lure from that bastards mouth!
With the boys fishing light tackle, I persevered and nailed a very healthy GT nearing last light on a Prosele Strong Pop. The fish monstered the popper and the fight was face-paced and aggressive in a mere 10 feet of water. A lot of fun for the last cast of the day before packing up camp and steaming home.
