Stella 14000XG Capacity.
April 28, 2014, 10:01:20 PM
Hi guys,

I'm looking to spool my newly purchased Stella 14000XG with Varivas Casting PE8 braid, but would like to hear if anyone has some actual capacities with the same or similar line.
Originally, I was under the impression it had a similar capacity to an after market 16000spool, but now I'm not so sure.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Brent.

I got about 230 metres of Sasame PE8 on mine.

300 metres of PE6 Sunline Castaway Monster Battle.

Hand winding PE8 off an Avet 50 for tension I got a whopping 200 yds on. Could get more with a proper winder but not a whole lot more. So I put the PE 8 back on the Avet and went with PE 6 instead (300 yds went on nicely). I'm told the 16000 spools hold 50 yds more but they seem to be sold out everywhere so can't vouch for that.

Thanks for the feed back. So I guess that Shimano's line capacity guide on the spool is close, I can live with 230 meters, should be enough.

Cheers, Brent.

Brent,

You have to bear in mind that with the odd wind knot etc that 230 metres gets reduced to 180 metres during a trip pretty quickly.

For the eventualities that Trev mentions, a good idea is to get an aftermarket spool - either a 16000 or 12000. The old SW12000 spool (Yumeya or Twinpower) seem to hold as much as the new 14000 - go figure.

Good point Trev.

Looks like it'll be better to buy an after market spool, which was something I was considering.

Now due to the SOM 16000 being impossible to fine, would the Jigging Master be a reasonable alternative?

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Brent.

Yer and the 250m on a Som spool gets reduced to 200m. What's the difference?!!  How many times has that 20 metres of line saved the fight?  Seriously jus use the standard spool, they have the best drag hands down!

Fishing less than 200 metres of line feels like you are pushing your luck with GTs to me.  Each to their own though.

The SOM 16000s do seem impossible to get now Brent.  I would imagine this is because they are making a new range colour matched for 2013 Stella?  They are superbly made things. The two biggest GTs I have ever caught (both well over 50kgs) were on a SOM 16000/Stella 10000 combo.

I have not used the JM 16000 but plenty of people do and I remember Brandon's review posted here which was very positive.

Agreed Mark it's always nice to have a little more in reserve , just in case.

I did have an email from Richard Fong stating there was a delay in spool manufacture, but should be available in late May.
I might just hang until an update is received in regards to the availability.

Brent.

Hi Brent,

I recently fished using the 14k reel and i was very happy with the reel in general, I spool it with 80lb Power Pro Hollow Ace pushing the 40lb drag on the reel with no failure to the line whatsoever, Hollow line is way better and cheaper on the long run,
you might want to consider the Hollow line option in the future and for sure you will get more line capacity, good luck.

Thanks Sami, I'll take the Hollow Ace option under consideration. I guess I've stuck with certain lines as I have confidence in the knots I use with it.
I've used The original Power Pro braid for years and really rate it.
Cheers, Brent.
