My trips for Halaniyat with Omar
November 25, 2014, 09:57:08 PM

Hello every one
Ive just came back from an amazing trip to halaniyat island  in southern oman , i planned it from last year

Its my 6th trip to oman for fishing
And 3rd for southern oman
I already did 2 trips to musserah island and one trip to musandam

The trip was 11 fishing days  from 8th to 19th november
I travelled from kuwait on thursday november 6 to muscat then another flight to salalah i stayed in a hotel for one night and then headed to ashuwaimeyah (3 hours drive) i arrived there on friday november 7

The actual plan was to go with my best friend , but before the trip he cancelled due to job obligations ..after day dreaming about the trip for the past year i wasnt ready to cancel it , so i planned to go alone ..but i had a call from my cousin telling me he wants to join even though he never fished with a rod before i told him hes more than welcome to join
I told him just bring a hand bag and the rest of the weight will be my gear
(His father used to fish al halaniyat from 1992 hes famous in our country as one of the best fishermen in kuwait)
I grew up on his stories of fishing there
Once he caught a total of 2800 kg of fish using hand lines in a 4 days trip

The trip was awesome despite the windy days
The main target was popping for GT and jigging and light casting

Rods used :
HOTS gipang 79
Valley hill jack the ripper
Stiletto 2nd generation by hots
OTI popping rod
Maxel light cast rod
Yamaga jigging rod

Reels used
Shimano stella 13 10000
Shimano stella 13 18000
Saragosa 5000
The old saltiga 4500
Spheros

Braids:
Varivas avani GT PE10 , PE7
Jigman PE4 , PE5
Varivas casting PE3

Leaders: from 40 lb till 200 lb

Poppers and stickbait and jiggs
Orion big foot , nambas , plug tropic , fraser pop , monster , trex , skev , mister Joe
Hammer head stickbaits and poppers
Fishermen ,Siren
ASWB , REEF EDGE , jigging master , shout and lots of more
The gear was baught from:
1-oceanactive dubai
2-barracuda dubai
3-bluewaters marine dubai
4- DSPG paris
The trip was on 37ft centrr console boat operated from ashuwaimeyah
The captain was Omar ive been fishing with him for the past 3 years hes very experienced and respectful

Special thanks :
to abdullah the owner of www.fishfishme.com for facilitating the trip

To cameron and john for their help when i went to the shop

To cameron saud and mohammed and karem and ashraf from oceanactive for hosting us on their lodge during the windy days which made the fishing a lot easier

To Mo and Yasser  from Noboundries

I wanted to  cover all the island in this trip

I went to Hasikiya , Alarab , Souda , Shnais, kebli

The first day was promising
I landed my First GT On my 4th cast
But i had a blow for the rest of the trip with the winds blowing which made popping hard ! We got smoked 4 times in the next days of the trip and damn i lost my hammer head poppers! I was so angry that i gave up on popping for the rest of the trip and kept the last day just for popping

In the last day i resumed my search for a monster GT , i raised a fish but it wont bite and i kept casting my ASWB stick bait
Until we moved to the shallow waters i saw the GT hit my lure but didnt hook it and kept retrieving on the 3rd strike BOOOM the fish is on it was a Monster for sure ! Ripping of the line on a 10kg drag setting and i kept on holding the rod and my bad luck continued there was i pliers behind me i tripped and fell down and the Monster snapped the line and gone with my lure
Im sure it was a monster .. A dark 45+ kg GT
That was the end of my trip

I really enjoyed the jigging there
I caught potato groupers , red snappers, golden trevally , amberjacks , jobfish , emperor and lots of more

The last cast was the best of the trip! I brought a whole bag full of light tackle but i only used 3 lures ! Due , mister joe , and smith

But i caught almost all the fish in mister joe
Before losing it to a dolphin , yes its a real dolphin not a dorado i was casting on a school of mackerels and it got tangled with it

We kept the fish for only two days fishing to give it as a present to the people of the village .. The other days it was only catch and release and we keep some for dinner

Ill be running the same trip next year on october for 10 days but still not sure about the dates if any one is interested let me know

Thanks for GT popping which i learnt alot from it
I hope you liked my post and im waiting for your comments !

Great trip, thanks for sharing!

No problem with killing a few fish to eat, but I don't agree with killing so many, even if they are a present for the locals. If every week in fishing season people would kill that many, it will affect the fish stocks, which are a lot more sensitive than one would think.

Absolutely Felix. There has been a string of recent pics from Southern Oman with boat decks full of dead fish. It is a kick in the balls for everyone there who does so much for fish conservation.

Hi Hamad,

Are you able to advise how that Hammerhead D or E or G model popper worked on Hots Gipang 79XH ? Was it hard going to use or appropriate for that particular rod with the popper weights?.

Not sure if you personally used that set up or maybe other fishos on the trip did. Interested to see if the 79XH works a popper of say 140 - 180g range, even though the rod is rated to 230g weights?.

Tight Lines !.

Regards

Leo

Dear felix and mark thanks for your comments

I've been fishing in Oman for the past 3 years , and the fish population has really went down due to over fishing , they use nets and lines with 1000 plus hooks ..
One of the reasons that on my trips I go alone or with 1 only that it's really hard to convince to catch and release specially with ppl  from my country Kuwait ( they even keep 15 cm grouper !!!)
I'll continue catch and release on my next trips
But I need advise on venting .. Cause I'm using a straw is it ok to use it?
And another question did any one fished for GT in muserah island Oman? I've seem a video with a pickup full of GTs more than 100 gt was caught with nets there .. Its really sad ! It might be a good place for popping

Hi loe

Thanks for your comment , I'm not a pro GT angler so I'm not in a place to give you advise on the rod
But from my use of the rod
The orion poppers was easy to pop with my hots rod
It works perfect with stickbaits
The hammerhead and fishermen it worked normal but the rod bends a lot when I pop

The reef edge was easy to pop also with that rod
