Amount off tackle on a trip.
January 24, 2015, 06:59:52 PM
Good morning,

With 3 weeks in advance i was thinking how much tackle do you guys taking on a trip.
I was thinking about 2 or 3 castingrods and 2 jiggingrods.
For lures i was thinking about 10 poppers and 10 stickbaits. For jigging around 25 jigs from 200 to 350 gr.

My trip will be to Raivavae. I think it is also dependent to which destination you go.

Best regards,

Arnout

I am starting to get my gear ready for the upcomming trip to Mafia Island off Tanzania.

Although this is mainly a GT and Doggie orientated trip I can not miss out on good fishing so I am going equipment heavy in both the popping/spinning and jigging departments.

I will take lures to match the tackle I take without going over the top.

Tight lines wnd screaming reels for your upcoming trip.

Hello Gerhard,

I understand you have to match the lures with the rod.

Raivavae is a DT and Gt orientated trip for me too.
At the moment i have the 10 pipers and 10 stick bait and 25 jigs.
The thing is specially the jigs weighting a heavy weight together.
And that is usually the problem for traveling fisherman.

When are you going to Mafia?

Best regards,

Arnout.

Flying around with tackle and lures especially jigs can become a pain.

You will never get in under the weight limit for airliners.

I budget for the extra baggage fees.

Will be flying from Saudi to JHB next week Thursday.

The on the 2nd of Feb from Jhb to Dar Es Salam and on to Mafia Island

It is always a problem. I try to put as much as possible in my rod tube as possible including my rods.
But jigs are the biggest problem for weight.

That,s going to be a long travel.

Best regards,

Arnout.

Hi Arnout,
I would limit the lures to 12 lures max, Raivavae is more of a jigging destination, however we encounter some good Yellowfin tuna bite and we lost many lures due to shark attacking the yellowfin after hook up,
The GT were active in the lagoon and we discovered a new spot for GT, however it is a very risky spot as most of the hits comes in less than 3 feet of water with structure around, so be ready to sacrifice some lures,
as for jigs you better off putting them and tying them properly with rod strap to the rod butt, by doing so you will be able to save a lot of weight.
Upon arrival to Papeete and when taking the flight to Raivavae you guys have to check the extra luggage as commercial as it is cheaper to do so, the freight section is located next to the domestic flight terminal and that need to be done in the early AM as the freight close 4 hours before flight departure.
you are allowed 20kg with 1 carry on on board less than 5 kg for free, your rod tube will cost you from $50 to $60 depends on weight but has to be checked in at the freight section.
try to see if you can give us a call at the shop so we can fill you with a bit of details that will be very helpful for your coming trip.

    Tight lines

Hello Sami,

Back in town?

12 surface lures. Ok.
Last trip i taped my jigs on a aluminiumstick with ducktape and put it in the rod tube.
No problem at al.

I will call next week.

Best regards,

Arnout.
