Moon phases - what is your experience?
January 12, 2015, 08:55:11 PM
Hi all,

I'd like to hear any theories that you have regarding moon phases and GT fishing. I recently fished from 1 day before the full moon till 5 days after and had a slow and sporadic GT bite. I'm not convinced the moon is the only factor at play, however I am convinced that lunar cycles do impact fishing in a number of ways.

I haven't fished GTs much, but I do plenty of fishing for other pelagics like marlin and tuna and have found the following with some consistency:

- fishing around the quarter moons is generally good (especially a building moon)
- fishing the lead up to the full moon is generally good
- fishing generally slows for a couple of days after the full moon
- fishing for a couple of days either side of the new moon is generally not that great

I know there are plenty of other factors that must be considered like current, wind, tides etc and the influence of each will often differ from place to place; especially for the reef dwelling GT. Moon and tides are however one of the few influences we can take into account ahead of time when planning a trip.

Unfortunately, I don't get to fish GTs very often so it will likely take many years to build some experience to support a theory. Given this, I would appreciate any hearing any theories or experiences that you might have had. Are there any particular moon phases that you will generally seek to fish or avoid completely?

There are a few older threads on this topic, however I thought it would be worth seeing if theories had changed or matured. I would also welcome any thoughts on how moon impacts dogtooth.

Thanks for your input!

Seems like this thread got neglected whilst I was away!

I tend to focus on Spring tides - larger and building tides. Either building to a New OR Full moon.

In many locations, wind will be another determining factor. Wind chop and general water movement encourages GT activity. You'll notice that it is rare to have increased GT activity when conditions are pond-like and calm. I believe they are less inclined to hunt during these conditions and are often seen as timid and non-committal to any offering.

One thing I do know about GTs is that they will do what they do - and sometimes that has no particular pattern at all.

According to my modest experience, only 15 trips for me  :-[ I tend to prefer the last days before the new moon, but if I take the example of the Andaman I made excellent fisheries in all conditions, the best chance to catch a fish is to put a lure in the water  :) a popper regarding me  ;)

2 to 3 days before the full moon gets the biggest and most aggro fish. Same period before the new moon is a wide open bite all day.
