voli voli advice

Hi Nick et al.,

Looking forward to our trip mid March.
I have read the reports from others (thank you!). Wondering what are your must have outfits and lures for those who have fished Fiji, especially Voli Voli.

Is it worth taking jigging gear?
and would you pack a light PE4 casting outfit?
Derek

Hi Derek,

You posted in the right area, but I think this will get a little more attention in the tackle and techniques board,

I will post it there too.

Hey Derek! There are members here who have fished Volivoli more than me, but for what it's worth, I don't think the GTs there are all-too-fussy.

As with any trip, I would recommend taking a range of lures. Before my visit, Nick said that sinking stickbaits had been successful, especially in the mornings. I ended up only using pencils (my favourites!), and Nick didn't struggle to get follows on anything he threw in the water (blooping poppers; floating stickbaits). All 100-150g. To present these diverse offerings, I reckon a "general purpose" PE8 outfit is sufficient; I always take a spare as well. Obviously, if you've got a strong personal preference for using, say, floating stickbaits, you might want to bring a more specialised rod.

If you like jigging, it's always worth taking jigging gear! I'm not a huge jigging enthusiast, but I know a group from WA did alright on jigs last year (there are definitely doggies around). I'm sure Nick can confirm.

I would recommend packing a PE3-4 outfit. I concentrated on GT popping, but got into a few tuna when we happened upon bait schools. It's nice to have that light rod ready to go at any moment - you might come across some good YFT if you're lucky. Plus, there's the usual menagerie (bluefin trevs, reefies, etc) to target in the shallows.

Basically, if you want to pop, jig and cast, you can do it all at Volivoli! As they say in the classics, whatever floats your boat  ;)

If it ain't topwater... quite frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

Prime season in fiji for big gt and yft. Big gt meaning 30 to 40kg models being real possibilities.

Bula Derek,

Sashin and Ryan thanks for the sending that through.

As Ryan mentioned basically anything that your confident in will work however I am always a fan of slow moving sticks, also a great option for when your energy levels drop in the late afternoon and big blooping poppers can be tough work.

With that said the Big Poppers are a MUST for sure here in the waters around Volivoli.

There have been some nice schools of YFT around so potentially both jigging and casting is an option, Not to mention the Doggies!

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Love the numerous possibilities!
Means I will get some use out of my collection.... though there is a jigging tackle distributor on the team so we may use every rod holder you have on board....

Looking forward to meeting you Nick.

Bula Derek,

I just re built the Bimini to give a little more share and also house another 12 rocket launchers....Total 18 RL on the roof plus under gunwale options also (best for light tackle roads)

Cheers
