Ocean Active Halaniyat 2015!
March 01, 2015, 03:55:17 AM
I arrived on the Island yesterday afternoon with Henk, Phil and Peter ready to open the books on the 2015 Halaniyat Season, The sea was gorgeous with the water conditions looking great. The sea is a nice clean green with the water Temperature hovering around 24 degrees. The fore cast for the following day was looking very shaky and with Ocean active currently running trips in three different locations along the Oman coastline it was easy to get an idea of what the weather was up to with live reports from all the Captains.
The following morning look like it would be a bust so we hit the water a day early to wet a line and make up for the time we thought we would lose. Henk had a fair size GT take a swipe at his Skipjack popper but the rest of the action was on the light tackle with Peter the least experienced of the group landing the two great spangled emperors. Today we headed out in the afternoon after a morning spinning from the shore in the lee of the island. The worst of the wind was gone so we made the run out to the grounds and began fishing, the GT's where out to play but we battled to stay connected and didn't boat any. They seemed to enjoy picking on Peter the most it was a bit frustrating but we are making a few adjustments and ready for tomorrow.

Between charters at the moment which is pretty rare so the boys rolled up their sleeves and got to work servicing outboards and deep cleaning the boats and villa. The weather has improved vastly compared to the last couple of days so when we finished up we snuck out to fish the magic hour as the sun set behind the mainland in the distance. I manged to boat a reasonable fish on a borrowed rod with a 120 Ulua and a 14k loaded with 80# JB hollow.

According to the temperature warm water is on the way over the next couple of days so things can only get better from here on out!

We had a frustrating time with the GT's the guys fished 3 days raised around 10 fish with a few solid hook ups but we never boat a single one. The weather was rough most of the trip which brings on a good bite but the hits tend to be very messy and it makes for tough fishing.

W,ve been lucky enough to have some great days here in the deep south, the fishing has been hard work but the rewards are there for those that persevere. The sail fish have been running wild and we have had plenty on stick bait in the early morning and late afternoon. Jerry and David decided to take them on with a fly rod and I was game and we managed a really nice fish on the 12wt.

Thge Viking and the Gilbatar Tuna boys also had a good time landing sails and a nice GT of 47 kilos They lost a few more monsters to the reef which seems to be happening a lot more than usual I'm not sure if the fish are getting more wily or we aren't packing enough horse shoes in the hatches.

The boys that really struck gold where the Brazilians Andre Marco and Marcelo, it was there first time Targeting GT's on Topwater but they where no steangers to big fish having done numerous trips to Panama for monster yellowfin Tuna. They had a fairly easy introduction to GT's when Marcello landed a smaller model on the first day. Day two saw some frustration with no fish landed and few favorite lures donated to Neptune. Day three saw a bit of extra crank on the drag stack of the Stella's and we managed to crack an incredible 2 hour session. Marcello stepped up to the plate first with a good fish and Andre followed soon after with a kegger of note. Marco wasn't left out of the action landing a beaut as well. but the crowning glory of the day was a monster double up by Andre and Marcos.

The two fish hit seconds apart in a vulgar display of power Andres hit was incredibly explosive far beyond what I normally see out here, his fish then proceeded to dump line off his Stella at an incredible rate taking over three quarters of his line in a single run, I had set his drag for him and believe me it wasn't set at school girl levels, I slowly pushed after his fish to gain back some line while draining line off Marcos reel who was also tangling with a brute. The boys dug deep, piled on the pressure and we landed two colossal fish Marcos with a black model of 55 kilo's and Andre phenomenal 63 kilo brute. Andre didn't feel up to holding the fish on his lap as he was worried about dropping it so we settled for a shot with them side by side and released them back into the water.

They are awesome GT's and that monster is a fish of a life time.

Have been seeing it pop up on quite a few different feeds on FB etc.

Congrats to all.
