attaching your leader to swivels/rings
April 12, 2015, 05:31:29 AM
Hi there,

this might sound like a really dumb questions but I am new to the circus and I would rather be safe than sorry, so I seek your advice on this one...

What is your favorite way of attaching your leader to a swivel or a ring for that matter - better said: which knot do you use for this?

I've just come back from my first overseas popping/jigging trip and my mate set up my rods for me. He knotted the leader directly onto a solid ring, on which he then put a split ring for connecting the lure. Would it not be better to use a fully rotating swivel instead of a solid ring?

As far as I recall he did a series of over- and underhand knots to secure the solid ring. Any other - better - suggestions?

Looking forward to reading you guys
Cheers Ruben

Hi Ruben,

It really doesn't matter attaching the connection to a swivel or a solid ring.....personal preference in my view.

As for the knot connection.....depends what pounds leader you could be using. I use a uni knot and chain knot.....up to say 100lb leader. Some people crimp the leader connection direction onto the lure tow point.

Ruben,

I use either an improved clinch knot or a uni (3 or 4 turn) in all my leaders from 10lb up to 240lb.

The heavier weights need a bit of practice so they snug up nice and tight but it's not particularly.

Regards,

Any good knot will work in the heavy stuff its so thick it'll never break at the knot. The thick leader is there for its abrasion properties not its actual breaking strain. Personally I like the Fisherman Mono it knots really well is supple and abrasion resistant fluoro is a pain to knot in the really heavy stuff there are "memory" knots that work well with it but they take a while to set up.

Hi Ruben,

try this knot, it worked great for me so far and is very easy to tie:

I tie it to a swivel (NT) connected with a split ring to the lure.

Cheers

Max

Dito! I suppose you mean 2/0 and 3/0.
If you can't find NT, Sasame swivels seem to be the same.
