Help finding lures!
May 06, 2015, 12:38:47 AM
Hey guys!

I'm chasing carpenter gammas and bluefish 100-140g.
I've spoken to carpenter Australia and they have no stock.
Most international stores seem to be out of stock. Wondering
If someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advanced

Billy,

Those of us who like Carpenter Gammas or Bluefish have had to develop a Zen like attitude to picking up lures.

For whatever reason, these lures are highly prized and the only advice I can offer is that you have to have patience.

They do become available, and sometimes quite easily, but their distribution is fairly tightly controlled and your approach has to be more strategic than trying to pick up something that's readily available. They tend to release one style, size or type at a time in whatever color combinations is currently in the catalogue.

Carpenter Lures Australia, Saltywater Tackle and Ocean Active are all great sources of the latest release. I've also found Fishhead in Brisbane and some of the Japanese stores like Plat and Pro Shop Mogi a source of lures. Don't try and play the ends off against the middle though, develop a rapport with a supplier and you'll be amazed.

My advice is to not get involved in the secondary market which can get silly, even for relatively ordinary lures. Gammas and Blue Fish are great lures in the right circumstances and with the right approach and a little patience you can build a decent selection without breaking the bank.

Just my thoughts.

The only thing I would add to Trevor's run down is to ask around for second hand models. Whilst the silly prices paid at Japanese secondary market sources are often best avoided, great deals can be had buying from direct from real people who are willing to let some lures go.  A good proportion of the Gammas I own for example have been sourced in this way.

Unfortunately, not many anglers have the privilege of getting onto the preferred list of customers who receive the majority of Gammas and Bluefish from "western" stores.

Carpenter Australia were supposedly getting stock of the BF 140's in April but I don't think it has happened yet?

Keep looking on the site for an update!

Cheers AG

They must be pretty good lures if people are willing to go to those lengths to get a chance to get one.

Are they a collector item or are they just fish slaying machines?

Lucas,

In my opinion, they are very good lures designed to catch fish.

If they're not intended to be used to catch fish they are just painted pieces of wood with wire through them.

Some are very decorative, pieces of art almost, meant for collecting and produced in small numbers but most that sit in peoples cupboards gathering dust are just fishing lures.

Regards,

Yea nice one.

I get anxious waiting a week for a ASWB or WCP order to come through from the West Coast.

You guys must be nervous wrecks trying to track these bad boys down.

Cheers.

Best place for a Gamma is on the end of a rod being thrown at an angry fish!

I tend to agree with Amr, although I must confess to recently buying a 250 Gamma which will never get used in anger. I'm not sure I have a rod which will throw it, let alone the stamina and skill to work  it.

The addiction grows, now i'm collecting ridiculously expensive lures....

Gammas be for using..... 100% with that sentiment.
