Thanks Guys

For me those Jet black GTs make up for the lack of size, so amazing to see them charge down a lure in crystal clear water.

Hey Arnout apparently the current wasn't right for doggies and they are also not that common on CXI.

Gents! What a trip. Love the video - great footage, bloopers and soundtrack to boot. Only thing missing was a mackerel showing up during 'Return of the Mack'... and a crucial net shot (but we won't speak of that!). Particularly great work prepping for the trip - I follow exactly the same philosophy - practice makes perfect! What's next on your list?
If it ain't topwater... quite frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

I'm definitely returning to Fiji this year - currently checking dates and booking. I might also be visiting your neck of the woods; a couple of my old workmates have just moved up to work at Crocosaurus Cove. If I do come up, I'll probably try to get some fishing in... hope you've sussed those NT GTs by then! Will be looking for some tips - I couldn't get them to the surface in 2013... and IMO they're less fun if you can't see the strike!

Out of interest, how many GoPros did you take to Kiribati?

Hi Jed,

Great report and cracking photos you seem to have had plenty of action while you were there.
I am heading over in February next year staying at Ikari House 6 off us in total one of the lads is just going for the photography. How did you find Ikari House and the guides I have heard its the best accommodation on the island and the food is pretty good.
Were you using barbless hooks on your poppers and stickbaits and did any particular produce well for you.

Hey Ian

From what we were told Ikari is the best lodge for this style of fishing

Food was amazing as we were eating fresh fish and normal western dishes as well.

boats were good size for fishing 4 guys out of the only bad thing about them was how slippery the decks can get.
There is no gripping at all so maybe look at foot wear options.

guides are a little more suited to flats fishing but are becoming more knowledgeable of the offshore options and what to look for you will at times have to instruct them where you want the boat placed ( as in how far from the reef etc, ) and what you want to target.

We use barbless 100 percent of the time anywhere in the world for top water

Lures that were stand outs

Cubera 100-180

FCL CSP s180s

Real Spirits Meryron Ya 190F

any thing like a CSP s110s FCL was ridiculous on smaller reef dwellers at times these would last one cast and never be seen again
so make sure you have heaps of small stick baits that will cast long distance

Pacemaker stick baits

FCL 190f Ebi pops

basically any popper in the 120 gram range that you can cast a mile

same with the stick baits and make sure you take lots of sinking sticks the bass trout and tuna will destroy them.

standard jigging gear 200 gram stuff

Love to hear how you guys go

Jed

Hi Jed,

Thanks for the detailed information on the stickbaits and poppers, we are now changing our plans as we were taking very few stickbaits just mainly poppers now we are in the process of putting an order together with Elite Tackle for some FCL CSP in various sizes. We had heard the birds were a pain in the neck constantly diving on the stickbaits but that may have been due to the use of floating stickbaits not sinking.

Was fishing 4 on a boat a bit crowded when fishing poppers and stickballs or were you having to take it in turns fishing, thanks for the heads up on the slippery deck we will now bring deck shoes with us.

Did you do any surf fishing with lures for the GT's or mainly stay on the boats?

Thanks again for for you help and information and I will post a full report on our return.

Hi Ian

Good to have a mixture of lures there for the GTs. In the past it has been very much a popper bite over the deeper dropoffs, but on a recent trip we found stickbaits cast right into the back of the breaking waves was far more productive. If the flying fish are thick you will probably have a ball over the deeper dropoffs catching GTs in pretty open water. If they are up tight against the reef break you will have fun mixing up the trevallies with red bass and other nasty lure thieves. Shore casting is great fun too, though it is quite swell dependant. Every trip is a new adventure!

Cheers
