PE8 capacity of 08 Stella 18000HG
August 13, 2008, 07:18:55 AM
Hi guys,
I just ordered an '08 18000 HG Stella and was wondering if anyone knows the reels capacity of PE8? I currently use YGK Gallis Ultra Castman which is rated at 113lbs in PE8 (and I only get 200m on my Saltiga 6000GT). I think I have read around 300metres but if it is more then I will need to bulk up the spool a bit.
Cheers,

Fraser

Cheers guys,

That is the same stated "shot" of PE8 as the Dogfight. I'll be interested to see what the "actual" capacity is. I find that there no 2 types of PE8 that fill any given spool to exactly the same level-I guess that's due to the varied diameter of the line.

If, as I understand, PE8 used to relate to approximately 80lb line, shouldn't the lines be re-graded so for example my YGK Castman at 113lbs currently rated PE8 would be rated at PE10+? It would mean we were all talking the same language. Also, if I use a rod rated to PE8 but have 113lb on the reel, I would probably be over testing the rod when bent into a good fish

No Fraser, the PE8 Ultra Castman not Castman is 113lb max breaking strain, average is more like 100-105lb, the PE8 Castman as with the Jigman is 80lb.The PE rating is more to do with thickness than strength.

PE ratings refer to a specific diameter not breaking strain (although I guess there are some minor variations between brands which is why they don't always fill to the same level). Most Japanese manufacturers follow the strict sizing of the PE system which makes filling spools much easier than with conventional lb ratings.

Just because a particular PE8 braid is rated to 100lb doesn't mean it should be called PE10. This simply means that they have created a much stronger braid for the same diameter compared to another manufacturer that makes 80lb PE8.

Guys,

For information - got the 18000HG today and it takes a full spool of 300m of PE8 (YGK ULTRA CASTMAN) PLUS approx 15 metres of 20lb mono backing which fills the spool perfectly.

LUKE - Any answer yet to Brandon's question on whether the carbon knob from the smaller 08 stellas will fit and survive on the 08 18000HG? I don't really like the Stellas original knob.
