Daiwa Saltist Hyper 792H
November 27, 2015, 08:53:58 AM
Just wondering if anyone has used the Saltist Hyper 792H for light stickbait/popping? I am looking at getting getting something along the lines on a Saragosa 10000 and run 50lb on it. It seems like a nice rod but a concern I had was that it has reasonably small guides. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Hi Joshua,

The small guides only really become an issue once you get up to the pe8 rods. You won't have a problem as long as you don't exceed 100lb leaders.

I have the Demon Blood 762x as a back-up light tackle GT/reef flats rod mated to a Daiwa 5000h Catalina running pe5/100lb varivas shock leader so is similar in specs to the hyper and can claim that it's a surprisingly effective cheap light tackle rod. I've just got back from a 5 night live on bare-boat yacht charter around the Whitsundays and would use this set-up when fishing the reef flats in the little blow-up tender (no use using the big and expensive gear when in the little tender where a big geet will just tow you around). It's largest catch was an est 15-20kg GT off the flats with the missus valve bouncing the little 2hp yamaha out to deeper water. It loved throwing around the little 42g Nomad Madscads and could still work 80g Cuberas.

All in all, the Daiwa Saltist rods are fairly capable pieces of equipment.

Thank for the info mate!
I am surprised on how much more cast weight that Demon Blood (90-230g) can handle compared to the similar sized Hyper (60-120g). Especially seeing as the PE8 rods of each have the same.

The Demon Blood is definitely a stiffer rod however don't let the quoted cast weights of the heavier Daiwa rods fool you. I won't throw anything more than 120g (including hooks) with the 762 and even then it's groaning under the weight.

As for the pe8 rods, that 150g-300g rating is pure fantasy. I had the Demon Blood 82xh as my intro heavy popping rod and it's definitely more of a pe6/130lb leader rod for throwing max 125g poppers and 150g sticks. over step these numbers and I found she'd groan hard on the cast and the small guides would cause some horrendous wind knots.

I must stress that these rods do just sit in my cupboard gathering dust as I have updated my rod arsenal to much better equipment but all in all, they'll do the job until you get hungry for more specialised rods or you want to target some bigger fish.

What species are you going to be targeting with this set-up? If you're hunting reef flats for coral trout etc, your other post regarding the Saragosa 8k or 10k becomes a little more clear cut. the 10k will be fine as, in my opinion, you don't want your lure travelling too fast in such shallow water making the 4.9 ratio of the 10k acceptable as it's kind of mid range between the usual low speed of 4.4 and the high speed of 5.6-6.2.

Yeah I always wondered about these ridiculous cast weights. 200g yes I understand but who's throwing 300g lures!

I can't say I want to spend too much on this sort of gear just yet. I already have a pretty expensive land based shark fishing hobby (along with other fishing I do), plus my popping combos won't get used all that often. So I'm really just after some entry level gear as it will most likely last me for years with its little use.

When it comes to species, I will take anything that will grab my lure.

Thanks for the advice on lure speed in shallow reefs, I will take that on board.

I got myself a Shimano Tcurve Revolution 802 Stickbait 10-24kg really cheap off gumtree on Christmas eve. Not a bad rod and no complaints at what I paid for it! I picked up a Saragosa 8000 last night. So all I need to do now is spool it up and get out there and catch some fish!
