Volivoli (Fiji) - February 2016

Khai Huang:
Great report and some very nice fish there!

I also ended heading out to volivoli recently in October. Managed to fit in 2 days out fishing own Half Cast.
The conditions were nice, there seemed to be a bit of current (just after the full moon) and there was definitely bait around, but fishing was a little tough.
Nonetheless, persisted and still managed a few GT and the usual by-catch. Great days out on the water and a spectacular area.

They were still rebuilding the resort while we were there (after the cyclone) with I think an official opening date of November.
Definitely have to get back sometime. There are few other places like it.

You bloody bet. Doesn't really count otherwise ;)

Seems you might have run into a bit of lockjaw, Khai. You'd think that current plus bait would equal pack attacks, but sometimes all predictions go out the window! Great to see you pulled a few despite the tough fishing. Hope you really slay them next time!

Pip Theobald:
I was there last week. Thanks to Nick from Voli Voli Beach Resort Fiji, for a top day out fishing. The big one got away so I'll have to go back again sometime. I failed to swap out the hooks on a Sebile 182 Stick Shad, the hook bent out after 5 minutes of heavy pressure under the boat. Lesson learned.

I managed to land 3 others and missed countless hits.

The outer reef at Rakiraki is spectacular.

It was my first time targeting GT. BIG learning curve.

I used a Saltiga-X 802 with PE8, 140lb Varvas leader, 200lb Black magic twisted bite leader. Mostly threw a Sebile Stick Shad 182, Chug Norris 120gm, Nomad Riptide 265mm.

Brandon Khoo:
Thr author of this report, Ryan is actually in Volivoli right now!

Ryan Keith:
Nice work for your first ever trip, Pip!

Sorry to hear the big one got away. As you'll read in my new report, even good hooks will straighten under the "right" conditions... but the standard Sebile ones are, indeed, too weak in my opinion (I don't think they were designed to stand up to GTs).

Yes indeed, Brandon! And what a trip it was. I'll post up my tale now :)
