Andre van Wyk:
Great report, pics and Trip Pete, well done!
Nice range of species mate... can't believe that Trigger hit that Popper!!!
We fished for them on the flts in Seychelles on Fly, and they are more tricvky, finiscky and addictive than chasing Permit!!! Crazy fish that can turn a Gamakatsu SL12 flyhook into a ball of crushed steel as simply and quickly as if were tinfoil!!
That Snapper is similar/identical to a species we get up alongout east coast here in South Africa, locally we just call the Speckled Snapper. Just checked up and it is the same species, Lujanus rivulatus as Zac identified above....
Great post a,d congrats on a great trip, and that 20 kilo GT on 30lb gear must have been fantastic.... great angling there bud.
Respect from the Darkside

Andre,
That trigger did some damage to the cubera.
Have a look at these puncture marks.
Thanks for your reply.

No more GT's that morning but I did land a beautifull reef fish of some kind (that the locals call snapper...?) that had some fierce pulling power.
Maybe some knows what this one is.?

Hi Peter, the fish in the picture looks like a Maori Seaperch (lutjanus rivulatus)same family as a red emperor so I wouldn't of thought they would take a popper :o.
Cheers Zac

It is a Maori Seaperch, very good eating. I think it all depends on the habitat the fish live in Zac, if our Red Emperor lived in water 3-15m deep I think we would get them on poppers too.
Kasey Leong:
Great focus on the pictures ;) And a nice assortment of fish.
If you go to New Cal you will get a chance to see 45-70kg GT sneak up on your popper ;D
Now that would be a sight!
Stephen Polzin:
Nice one Pete, good to see you've got onto some decent fishing. That's a great Maori Seaperch. Like Zac said, they're in the same family as Red Emperor (Lutjunid) but that's also the same family as Jacks and Red Bass so not that surprising that they'll hit a popper.
I haven't thrown a popper in months with the constant wind up here. Surely it can't go on forever!
