Hi all

I'm David, live in Sydney and try to fish every year in Hervey Bay. Have not yet landed a big GT on a popper (straightened the hooks the last time) but will be trying harder next year.

Happy to be here and impressed with the level of knowledge on the board.

cheers

Evening Everyone,
My name is Gary currently in Biloela QLD, First got the GT bug casting for them around the Sugar loading wharf at Hinchenbrook several years ago ( got totally smahed 3 times in 30mins around the pylons ), and have had the itch ever since. I have even gone to the extent of building a bigger boat to try and get to those less fished places. Anyway this looks like a site with a lot of knowelage behind it which is good because I have about 1,000 questions which have been running around in my head for quite a while now.

Hej everybody,

I am a young froggy (french) lucky enough to be a fishing guide and work all over the world.
For the moment I've been to Gabon, Djibuti, Panama, Sweden and  French Guyana. I will soon go to Indonesia, Fidji and New-Caledonia. Maybe if everything goes well, Wallis and PNG.

I grew up in Africa and fished my first tiny GTs when I was in Madagascar.

I know few guys on this forum and hope that one day we'll all meet somewhere for fishing.

Cheers.
Alban.
Catch and Release should be a reflex.

Hello!

My name is Gerd, I'm from Austria and totally new in Popper and Jig fishing... I don't have the possibility to fish for GT or Tuna here in my country(as we don't have connection to the Sea) but I'm planning to travel the world and get all kinds of Jacks and Trevallys on Spinning and fly-Gear.

Week 36 and 37 I'll be travelling through Australia and maybe I'll have a chance to get one or two hookups on those great fish! Otherwise I'll be on the Maldives in Feb. 2010 just for fishing!

Cheers!

Gerd

Gday all. Name is Brett Guy and I live in Innisfail Came up here about 4 years ago from the south coast of NSW. Pretty much take part in all forms of fishing and just getting started on GT popping. Most of my fishing down south was LBG for the usuall suspects(still havn't landed that beakie yet though >:() and so far ahve spent most of my time up here fishing the rivers, creeks and chasing impoundment Barra. Looking forward to getting smashed up by some big bruising GT's though. had my first intro to it a couple of days ago with some classic back out of the water follows but no hookups on the popper. Mate ended up getting a 30kegger on a live mackeral though. Awsome fish

Hi guys,

My names Patrick and I'm based in Sydney. I've been fishing since i was about 6yrs old and these days I do most of my fishing offshore, jigging for kings and tuna. After a bit of research (and some new rod purchases) I'm liking the idea of popping for kings LBG style!

Recently my best mate moved up to Cairns so of course i will be up there visiting him as often as possible and no doubt with him being a keen fisherman also we will spend most of that time popping for the holy grail! ;D  Also I have managed to get the idea of popping for sailfish stuck in my head so may have to venture to Kuala Rompin next year.

Anyway its great to see such a wicked Aussie forum.. already picked up some good tips and hope to be sharing reports soon.

Cheers

Welcome.

I don't think there is any "one" spot that has the biggest GTs landbased. There are quite a few spots where big GTs can be encountered but they are all geographically widespread.

Perhaps the most infamous spots would be the likes of the rocky outcrops and concrete breakwalls of Tokara and Okinawa.

The northern coastline surf of South Africa and Tanzania...

Indonesia has some great points and outcrops to which other members may be able to give you some more information on.

The QLD coast of Australia also has a lot of potential - still plenty of exploring for anglers to do...

Thanks a million for the info. Will be moving back to South Africa soon and have started my quest in accumulating the required gear (HotsRod 8' 3" teamed with Accurate 30).Want to try landbased kingies with this as well. The locals all use overheads with mono and get beat up regularly not withstanding 200lb braid leaders!I tried a Trinidad 20 with a Diwa rod on the Nomads trip and a shovel nosed plug.Hooked and landed a 25kg+ GT,but what a workout.Had the drag hammered down as far as it would go and he still took string off me.Have just read the trip report of the group that preceded us.They were very fortunate, lots of fish and much more favourable conditions. We had winds of upto 35knots and cloudy most of the time.We made up for the numbers with quality however.Has anybody got a call on when one can expect the most favourable weather conditions in the area that Nomads operates? The sickness is still on me and am already scheming how and when I can back into battle. This is even though I still have to nurse my bruised ribs from one of the strikes . :D

Gentlemen,
my name is Cameron. I am a West Aussie currently living in Shanghai. I live for fishing and family. I started fishing as soon as I could walk in the far North West, cutting ny teeth on Barra. I'm always looking for new ground and "the edge". I guess I got addicted to GT's in Exmouth in WA. If you don't know where that is, you need to find out. The Trevally of all types there are simply amazing. The North West has very little pressure and even less targeting of these species compared to global interest. Jigging is an obsession but nothing gets the blood pumping like watching a VW explode behind a popper. My other passion is Saltwater Fly Fishing. From tying to the take. I am happy to help with questions on the North Coast especially the Kimberley which will be recognised in the not to distant future as the place to go for Xtreme popping. It's the last Frontier. I look forward to reading about others techniques and expeditions. Tight lines, Cam

I fished literally every day for 12 months there. The Gt's are thick if you know the signs and patterns. November is an excellent month for landbased popping. The New moon and the 3 days leading up to the full moon are best but every night on dusk is worth a cast. There are plenty of places to try your luck, but near the naval pier and a place on the tip called Oysters are the easy and traditional place to chase them. I pride myself on casting stamina and landing power but I have been dragged into the water off the beach once and suffer from GT back. Gt's to 20kg are common with a few regular 30kg fish making an appearance. There are much bigger that cruise through and give the holy shit factor but they can be difficult to land due to terrain. Common bycatch on poppers at these locations are sharks, cod, Big barracuda etc etc. It truely is a fishing mecca. Everything you've dreamed of from Bonefish to marlin. It is the closest point to the continental shelf on mainland Australia. I have seen massive G's cruising off the tip of WA also, there is no pressure at all because of the remoteness. Well worth a look.
