I was wondering what brand of split rings you guys prefer for your lures when popping for GTs. I used to get the Owners in the 11H (I think) but have now gone to the heaviest Varivas rings (400lb). I had a couple of Owners look close to being compromised although to be fair, I never had one go on me but have found the Varivas are really strong. What other brands are reliable against very strong fish?
Where do you get them? ;D Trying to get specialised GT equipment in Oz is a nightmare.

I only use the owners when upgrading. They are the only ones I have seen and get a hold of.

Picked up some DECOY split rings in Dec while on a tackle shop crawl between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast [only ones we hadn't pested before or often].
No9 are 200lb compared to Owner's 170lb and look a little bit thicker and a duller silver colour. I will use them just as an alternative not a replacement for my Owners.
I think they worked out cheaper and are 10 per pack.

I have had Owner split rings open up before once, and had the many of them start to open, with the hook or lure starting to progress off the ring.
I now use Fisherman in 300lb+ and have never looked back. Pretty good price and some of the best quality, they even come with their own 300lb+ swivel (vice versa) 8) Unfortunately, have only ever seen them in Japanese stores.

I've got some of the Fisherman ones that come with the swivel attached. Are any of our locals worth looking at? I'm not sure there are any rated to that weight. I've heard of another brand called Red Sea but have never seen them. There is one very intersting swivel made my a company called Bouz which are a funny shape. If only I could bloody post pictures...!! They are rated up to over 500lb. They look quite fragile to me but I have a friend who fishes a lot more often that I do who swears by them and has tested them extensive in Komodo.

Can't say that i know of any.
All i can say is that Wilson manufacture some damn fine swivels adequate for popping & jigging.
Not sure if they do split rings though.
I don't see myself switching from Fisherman anytime soon....that's why i buy 5 - 10 packs at a time from Japan.

Plat has both Fisherman and Varivas.....is that where you get them from Luke?

Yeah that's right - users not following the rules despite sufficient and fair warnings.

Has any one tried taking D shackles off there marlin lures and using them in place of a split ring? I haven't tried it but it sounds like a good idea.

Ivan, I think the D shackle could catch up and tangle when casting and popping, they are tops in trolling with constant drag through the water. I have thought about it but haven't tried it.
