Hi all,
We are having Carpenter rod trial day on October 23rd (Sunday) in Brisbane.
This will be outside activity (as long as weather permits) and what we are aiming for this day is to provide range of rods for people to cast and feel and understand Carpenter products more. (lures and reels will be BYO)
We will have Kenji Konishi san with us so that you will have a opportunity to ask him questions and advises directly (I'll be translator for you).
There will be no cost to attend this event and soft drink will be provided.
Please register your interest to join us by email ([email protected]).
Please note - unfortunately spots will be limited and our network customers will be prioritised for this event if we have more than manageable numbers.
Please feel free to PM / email me for further questions.
Cheers,
Tak

Any chance of a Sydney based event sometime....

Any chance of a Sydney based event sometime....
Not sometime soon unfortunately. This day was the only spare day for us and we have chosen Brisbane because of number of GT angler there.
It will be great to see some of keen people from interstate there.
-
Andrew you know you want to do it - come up and spend the day. Flights are dirt cheap from Sydney. If there are a few people and you can all get organised on the same flight I will come out and pick you up from the airport.
-
I know Janelle, cheaper than the lures. Just the date is a bit of a bugger. Will see what I can do.....
-
If only I knew about this sooner otherwise I would have come back from New Caledonia via Brisbane instead of Sydney >:( I leave Noumea on the 23rd.

Hi Andrew,
Waiting on Fukui-San to confirm his schedule for next year. He is supposed to come fishing with me early next year and we will hold a seminar to showcase his experience and expertise in Sydney.

This is great news Tak.
I will see you there on the 23rd.
Luke
-
That's great Luke.
I'll work with Konishi san in the next few days what rod we can bring for this day but I think we will have good range of newer GT and Kingfish rods.
-
I'm keen. Are there still places available?
-
Darren, Tak should be able to fit you in. Can you please e-mail him on the address above.
-
Hi Darren,
There are still a few places left. We are leaving from Fish Head at 2.30pm and then heading to the water from there. We will wait till the day to decide on the exact location so we can see what the wind is doing (Fish Head is close to the water so it will only be a couple of minutes drive from there).
You need to bring a reel and whatever lures you want to cast. Konishi san, Tak and Fish Head will provide rods for people to cast. Bring shoes that you are prepared to get wet as we will probably walk out onto the flats a bit to cast and then as the tide comes in we will move back to the rock walls.
It is really going to be an amazing day. It is not often you get to learn and observe a fisherman of Konishi's calibre in such a way.
As Brandon says PM Tak or Fish Head if you want to come along.
Cheers,
Janelle

Any chance of "video-ing" the event and upload it in you tube?
Really interest on how Konishi-san cast and played with Gamma and other lures.
Konishi-san is heading for LPB after this event?
many thanks

Wan if it isn't videoed, carpenter have a dvd out with demos of how each popper and gamma's are worked.
Not in english but pretty easy to interpret. Features some of the earlier rods as well- not the new range.

got the old dvd already...

Wan, that DVD was professionally done. There is no way that someone taking a segment of Kenji San retrieving a Gamma is going to produce something as good as that. If you are struggling to get a Gamma swimming properly, find someone who knows how to work one and get them to show you.
We are not going to NC - our trip was supposed to be next week but was cancelled due to mechanical problems.

yup2, agreed 100% with you Brandon. That DVD is well documented.
Just wonder if by any chance someone taping Kenji action during the trial day. Thats all.
Kenji supposed to fish LPB with you this week right? Mechanical problems?

We had good time with great weather and my thanks to Fishhead for organizing and hosting the day. To everyone came for the day, I hope everyone enjoyed the day and found it useful in establishing what rod may suit you.

Nice meeting, good opportunity for lucky anglers to check top level rods :)
I'd like some detailes and impression (casting and stickbait working) for EP 82/38. Thanks a lot

I hope to be able to comment on the 82/38's ability to handle GT's after next week ;)

Hi Antonino,
It is very versatile rod and work well on both medium size poppers and stickbaits. I'll consider this rod as alternative to CV79/40 when I need longer casting distance. CV79/40 has softer tip and bit more all rounder in terms of lure selection and it can be used with higher drag for larger fish.
Andy - looking forward hearing your impression next week ;)
Cheers,
Tak

Thanks for detailes Mr. Otsuka.
I will wait whit interest Andy's review for field test.

As will I. I am trying to decide between an EP or the Coral Viper or the Ripple Fisher Ultima 79H as a stickbait rod for GT.
-
not really comparing like with like there, Stu. The EP and CV are essentially PE8 rods whereas the 79H Ripple is built for PE10. You should be comparing it to the 79MH.

Brandon. Thanks for the info.
-
Stu,
Comparing the rods here in the shop, the EP 85/36 has tip stiffness similar to the Ultimo 79H, but the bottom end of the Ripple Fisher is a step heavier.
The extra power of the Ripple is great if you are wanting to fish PE10, but the length of the EP85/36 makes distance casting and working of the lures very easy. The EP82/38 was also a very nice rod to use, it has a touch more power than the 85/36 but won't cast quite as far with the shorter length.
The Coral Viper is stiffer at the tip than the other two rods, it makes a great all-round stickbait/medium popper rod. However, if you are looking for something more dedicated to stickbaiting, then I would look more at the EP or Ultimo. Alternatively, the FCL EXT81MH and Zenaq Fokeeto 83-7 are also worth considering in this class of rod.
Cheers

Duncan,
Thanks very much for the great comparison.

I think I need to buy an EP82/38 ;D

It's next on my list as well Jay. Nearly bought one when I got the Monster Hunter 80H... but two new Carpenters in one day would have caused a domestic riot.

Bit of a contradiction there, can anyone confirm either way?
-
I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know
Duncan

I think it is more a reflection of individual perceptions. Tak and I also have a different view on this. Like Duncan, I personally feel the CV has a slightly stronger tip than the EP myself but he feels differently. I think at best, the difference is marginal.

A bit difficult comparing a 8'5" rod and a 7'9" rod with difference of 8" ( nominal ) in my opinion but CV79/40 is stiffer than EP85/36 which is more " whippy " in my hand , perhaps a better comparison is EP82/38 which is closer in length and in it's power rating ( Carpenter rating wise ) .
Jon .
-
I think Jon has hit it on the head - hard to do comparisons between rods of such hugely different lengths.
-
the comparison being discussed is between the EP82 and the CV79
-

The answer still the same EP82/38 is an easier casting rod than the already easy to cast CV79/40 , as for back bone , etc. , will have to wait for next week after my trip to the Molluccas .

I am most envious of you Jon. I think the Banda Sea still has many places with monster GTs that are yet to see a lure. The very best of luck.

which part of Molluccas, Pak Jon? Buru/Ambon/Seram?
any established charter or still at expedition stage?

Izhan, I think Jon may not be checking in as he is off very soon. I believe he is starting at Tual.
Off all the places anywhere on earth I think the Banda Sea has the most potential for truly undiscovered monster GT sites. If only the logistics were not so damned difficult!

guys, some bend on the ep82/38.
first time GT angler got baptism of fire from Tual GT, he did konishi's style high stick tough ;D
the fish on this fight is probably about 15kg ish

Lovely :)
And he got into a pickle with a slipping belt by the looks of it :).
