Title: Rigging GT lures for sailfish as bycatch?
Post by: Lorenz Seebauer on November 15, 2022, 04:20:04 AM
Hi,
How do you rig your GT lures, when there is a chance for sailfish?
Is a single hook at the rear (maybe with some assist cord) increasing the chance to properly hook them up?

Lorenz - rigging for sailfish is very very different to what we rig for GTs. On lures, we rig much smaller hooks for sailfish. There really isn’t a compromise rig that is suitable for both that I have seen. Sailies are a real chance capture. I’ve only had two when fishing for GTs in some 23 years of GT fishing

I already feared that, but hoped for some kind of compromise. I got a hit last year and lost one after some minutes this autumn.

I really can’t think of a compromise rig. We use as thin and sharp a hook as we can for sailfish whereas you need strength for GT.

We lost 2 sailfishes in a row (gt popper with single and triple hooks), next 20 casts we got more interest from sailfish side.... So I have the same question: what is the optimum hook size/shape/thickness I need to keep for such cases?

Interesting discussion.
I am not expert on this but agree with what Brandon mentioned.
