Saltiga Or Stella
October 23, 2011, 09:01:06 PM
Thought I would start a post Where people could express their personal opinions on these two brands. Is either reel superior in terms of performance or hardware? is the new saltiga better than the old? Is the dogfight the best? or is the stella better? for agruments sake keep the reel sizes to 6500 (diawa) and 18000 (stella). Personally, the dogfight is on top.

What's your weapon?

Hey i think its fun to flog a dead horse.

Not mentioning any names but once some of the die hard brand specific members get into this it will be a crack up.

Stats anyone? Ha ha ha ha.

....... Is either reel superior in terms of performance or hardware?........
Alan Hawk has performed very detailed technical reviews of Stella and Saltiga:
http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/stlsw.html
http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/salt10.html

You have to look elsewhere for evaluations in relation to how the models perform over longer periods in a real-world context.

NOT AGAIN!!!

I think the last time this topic came up, I said I was going to delete any future threads on it and ban the member who starts the thread. All this thread ever achieves is it brings out the most polarized and unsubstantiated nonsense.

I will let this thread run for now but please keep it sensible. If it deteriorates, it will disappear.
If it swims; I want to catch it!

Stella has my vote BUT I haven't owned a large Stella or Saltiga (yet - going through that process now!) Given how my smaller Stellas have performed though I will be going that way again.
Holden v's Ford, BMW v's Mercedes... I think this is the same arguement.  I think the best way to make an informed decision as a new buyer is to have a look at Alan Hawks' reviews and then do what Dan suggested and look for long term real world reviews.  I don't think anyone is going to be let down in the high end of the market.  Where honest Warts and all evaluations are really needed is in that Grey area of the "Next Step Down" the problem here is that there are alot more manufacturers with vested interests muddying the waters.  Add to this the fact that there are Magazines out there doing "Cash for Comment" for brands such as the now infamous Tufftackle and it is no real surprise that there are some disappointed punters out there.  Just my thoughts as a newbie.
Cheers,
    John.

I believe Daiwa has upped the ante with the introduction of the new Saltiga in 2010.  The new technology in the reel seems promising.  I've read Alan Hawk's review and tear down of the reel, but I've got to play with it myself to know for sure.  I'm hard headed like that.  I'm personally a Saltiga fan, not even sure why since I've owned and fish with both Stellas and Saltigas... Saltiga feels much more durable and tank-like.  It feels like a no frills, just show up to work and get the job done kind of reel...kind of like myself.  Maybe that's it. As the saying goes, "you are what you fish"....lol

I have both, I fish them hard and I enjoy both.

I get them serviced regularly and neither has let me down.

Like all things mechanical, look after them and they will reward you.

in my personal opinion, both are excellent reels.. there isn't really a clear 'leader' in this age-old question.. to each his own.. enough said.
