What is the best knot for joining a wind on leader to a double in the main line?
can you use the same knot in mono and braid or is there a
different knot for the different lines.

I use a loop to loop connection for attaching doubles to wind-ons. Never tried a double in the braid to wind on leader but the same knot should work. Its the same way I connect braid doubles to twisted leaders.

Sam, what I will say is that a connection is only as strong as its weakest point. For a loop to loop connection, you've got to be careful that you do not have the braid bunching right at the bottom of the loop. If this occurs, it will cut the loop. It's got to grab around the loop, not at the bottom of it. If you do the loop to loop effectively, it will be a very strong connection.
With a friction knot, you have got to learn to tie them properly. If you do, you will have a very secure connection. From a personal perspective, I use the FG and PR knot. I am no fan of the midknot because I am of the view that you're better off with the PR knot if you want to tie this form of knot. This is just a personal view. If you want to learn how to tie a fast friction knot, there is nothing you can tie faster than a FG knot.
Also, with regard to the article, please note - the knot is NOT stronger than the mainline. That is just a silly statement. I have heard many claims over the years of knots that retain close to 100% of breaking strain but this is the first time I have ever heard of a claim that a knot is stronger than the mainline from which it is tied! :D
