Ok due to the fact that the nearest GT from where im sitting is about 900km's away i've decided to persue some other means of satisfying my urges... and i've come to realize that there is a relativly untoched fishery right under my nose... Deep jigging
The only catch is that i have to go much deeper than i ever have before... much much deeper which leads me to ask what reel will be best suited and or recommended. we will be fishing in waters anywhere from 100-500mtrs and using jigs upto 600gm's
line capacity is my main delemma and i've been advised to load up with at least 500m of 80lb
JM pe8?
Saltiga 50?
Ocea jigger?
Blue heaven?
Accurate?
Now im no jigging guru and i am open to any advice
thanks

Most of the reels you mentioned only holds between 300-500m of 80lb braid. Unless you dont size to PE 5 or 6 and go for a high powered one, ie Varivas Avani Big One.
Of the reels you listed, I'd go for the Powerspell PE8 and OJ 5000P. Simply coz they're not wide reels and easier to jig with.
-
Thanks Hon-su, i was looking at some PE6 Varivas that is 85lb.... Avani 10 * 10 and or the big one which as you say will help me get more on.
I had a look at the JM's yesterday and they felt ok but the OJ5000 is the one im leaning towards but thats why im asking
-
Did U buy that 4000P that was for sale here??
-
Naa i didn't, i think the 5 would be more suited??
-
why not get a Daiwa Seaborg Megatwin 750?? Holds plenty!! lol
-
Ryan told me about them yesterday, i think ill stick to the conventional for now
-
in my opinion the best reel would be the L120, i fit 575m of PE6 varivas on mine and use it for all my deeeeeeppp jigging, its lever drag lighter and overall quite a small reel with more then enough power for its size, the OJ is too heavy and too big even tho its not very wide its way too high i reckon plus do you want a star drag, i had a play with a PE 4 jm reel and was not impressed, felt cheap to me, i saw an accurate the other week and was really impressed but still heavier then the L120, i think the saltiga would also get a bit clumsy cause its quite a wide reel. i would only look at the L120 or the accurate's and forget about the rest.
just my 2c

if you can get the Ishidai Z40 it'll be awesome. Ive got the smaller one Z30 and Ive fitted 400yds of 65lb whiplash. So the Z40 probably 500yds of the same line??
Yes the L120 is a very good awesome. Holds enough line there and looks good as well!!
Are the blue ones still got gold trim or is it now blue and silver???

Hi Neale, Im jigging in 300m plus, targeting 20-45kg Bass in New Zealand. Using OJ5000 with 500m of PE8 Ultra Jigman. What sort of fish are you targeting? These Bass are bottom huggers, so we only lift our jigs ten meters off the bottom, I'm of the opinion that a Non-jig reel could be used, maybe a tyronos 30 two speed? Bit heavier, but if its capacity you want, could be an option.
I hear all the Hard core jiggers out there turning their noses up at that suggestion...
-
Hi Shane, apparenly Bass, Hapuka, Blue eye and who knows what else.. not sure which way im going to go at this stage??
Hmm Ishidai you say honsu, i did consider buying one in the past but decided against it, all kinds of options
Excuse my ignorance but is the L120 the blue heaven?
-
yeh and there's now a lower or higher gear ratio version.....L120 Hi/Lo
-
Damn they are hard to track down too, the new models do look sweet tho.
Any one know who sells them and or when they're released??
-
we have one red l120 left at work, there is no australian distriburter anymore so you wont find any of the new ones in aus, you would have to import yourself, to be honest im not a great fan of the new speeds, i reckon they were spot on with the 4:9:1 on the orignal ones
-
You gonna sell your L50 Luke?? Nice reel isnt it =)

Campbells hey? i rang this arvo and inquired.. i wonder how obtaining parts will be??
-
yer, well not really too much goes wrong with them, i guess its just getting replacement bearings which you could get from plat when the time comes
-
Hmmmm ::)

Neale
Chris Lian from this forum had one for sale in the jigging section, it is the older model if that is what your chasing.

Thanks for that Zac

Out of curiosity what rod are you gonna pair the blue heaven up with?
I'm wondering what rod options are there for deep (300m+) jigging. Smith 44 Mariana 300 comes to mind.

A JM 500 at this stage, max 500gm jig and rated to PE10... will keep you posted how it goes
-
I do quite a bit of DEEP jigging in NZ (over 400m) and I use a Ocea Jigger 5000P. I have it spooled with Daiwa Saltiga Boat Braid PE6 (80lb) and it holds bang on 600m without backing. Other favoured overheads used in NZ for the very deep stuff is Shimano's Torsa 20 and 30 models.
-
There's also the Torsa 40 with harness lugs as well.
-
I find the Torsa to be a solid and smooth reel but for my liking too heavy and too wide for jigging. Has much more wobble when you crank than say a Jigger or other narrow spool overhead like say an Accurate 665N.

Did you end up getting the JM Neale? I've got a Valley Hill Maori Spirits PE10 rod and it's a real sweet piece of equipment.
Did you get the new SOM L120?
-
Yeah got the JM jay, havent got my reel yet (bloody customs) and i learnt my lesson with importing more than $1000 worth of gear at one time.. little did i know
hopefully they'll post it next week
