Title: Spangled Empror vs Dorado vs Spanish Mackeral
Post by: Adrian Braun on August 19, 2012, 10:57:16 AM
Rate these three fish for taste, and for fighting power when hooked.

Example

1- Tastiest
2- next tastiest
3- least tasty

1- Hardest fighter
2- second hardest fighter
3- weakest fighter

:)

Curious as to why Adrian chose these three fish in particular

An unusual trio to pick I agree, but I'll have a go.

In terms of fighting ability per Kilo I would say Spangled Emperor, Dorado then Mackerel

To be honest in terms of taste the order is probably the same, though the Dorado and Makkie might switch depending on method of preparation.

I'm not even sure how to start and it would be dependent on what you regard as "hard fighting ability". It would be hard to pick three more different fish.

If you place great emphasis on acrobatics, the dolphinfish will win hands down. If it's speed, the spaniard will win and if it is the ability to bust you off, it will be the spangled. Conversely, if you regard speed highly, the spangled will trail the other two considerably.

I personally don't regard the spaniard as a hard fighting fish but that is partly because the poor spaniard is generally being hooked on heavy GT gear and getting its butt smacked. I love dolphinfish but then, every one I have hooked has been on relatively light tackle which gives the fish an opportunity to really perform. Spangleds are tough as hell but that is driven to a large degree by the areas we hook them. Let the fish have its head and it's a goner.

On eating ability, I regard spaniards highly but dolphinfish is excellent provided it is really, really fresh. Spangled is ok but not my favourite fish.

The John Dory is an amazing fighting fish

Why dont we add some details like a specified rod, reel and leader then compare.

May also want to mention fish weight.

I.e 5kg fish, 20lb braid, 10kg rod and 5000SW.

Thoughts?

Chris

Bit hard to compare, but here's my 2 bobs worth:
Mackeral and Dorado about the same eating quality (very good)
SPE fairly ordinary chewing.
Spaniards under 10kg are pi55 weak on any tackle (imho) but bigger ones seem to have more spirit. Dorado are very erratic, but overall, hardly a real bulldog.
SPEs are a tough little scrapper that punch above their weight. Great fun at the overnight anchorage on the reef! I got a big one years ago on 8kg tackle that kept me tied up for 15mins.

They are particularly aggressive towards 200 Gammas, when worked correctly.

Not weighing into this one directly but to spice the debate up I reckon the Long Nose Emperor is a much harder fighter then the Spangled.

I think Brandon has summed it up, they all fight different and spaniards are hard to judge because I at least have tended to get them as by catch on heavier gear.

Spango for me probably bests the others. I got a nice one about 4-4.5kg recently and thought I had a 5-6kg GT on!

Mackerel is by far the tastiest for mine

Also I agree with Mark that in fact the long nosed emperor, which is one of my facourite light tackle fish, fights harder

P.S weird question

Another vote for the long nosed emperor over the spangled. Mind you, a Chinaman would tow a long nosed emperor backwards!

What about if I hand-gaffed it?

x 2 Brandon

i encounter aggregations of adult Chinaman here each October, and whether spearing or popping or drift baiting they are one helluva machine. even by Lutjanid standards. they taste pretty damn good too [no ciguatera here], even sweeter after having thrown all those [possibly] ciguatoxic ones back over the years in FNQ. for the table tho......give me a fresh Hippurus any day ;)
