Title: 2 Speed conventionals
Post by: Nathan Tsao on May 05, 2012, 05:37:04 PM
Wassup guys,

Im looking to get a reel for a bit of multipurpose; jigging, trolling, live baiting. Was thinking about a Saltiga 2 Speed 35 or 40. Anyone jig with this reel before. If so, do you find yourself using the lower gears much. I've never jigged with a 2 speed before, but it seems like it may be helpful to pull a big fish off the bottom.

My target fish for the jigs are big AJ's, GeeeTeee's, and ahi, while the trolling and live baiting will be for wahoo and yellowfin ahi.
I currently have a Saltiga Hyperspeed 30 that i use for popping, but i want more capacity for fishing down to 70 fathoms.
Thanks!

So i guess 2 speed reels aren't really used in the jigging community? If i end up getting one just to satisfy curiosity, i'll test out if they really are efficient at bringing big fish off the bottom. Anyone have any advice against this before i spend money on something that i may have no use for?

For what it is worth Nathan, I can never remember seeing a serious jigger using a two speed conventional.  Take that only as a personal observation please.

Thanks Mark, i've never heard of it either. It just seems like a logical thing though; you get a big bite down deep, click it into 3:1 gearing and winch dat faka off the bottom with straight power, then once its coming up - click back into 6:1. Once i get around to rigging one up, i'll report back on how it performs, or how it does not!

Some people stateside use a Talica II or Accurate BX2-30N or BX2-600N for jigging.    There is a longer jigging handle coming out for the Talica II I think from Jigging Master or through Kilsong's shop I think.
