Title: 18k Stella / 20k Stella ratios?
Post by: Jay Wilkins on July 01, 2015, 05:02:13 PM
Hey lads quick question,

Before doing any research I purchased a new Stella SW20000 PG for popping. After this I was educated about the 18000HG which leaves me with selling it or putting up with the extra handle turns per cast.

My other option is purchasing the 18k gear set and transferring them over. With the bonus of the 20k spool being retained.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks.

I have a reel business so parts are discounted which should make it feasible.....maybe.

Jay,

Evidently it can be done but I'll leave it to one of the experts to let you know exactly what needs replacing.

Don't give up on the 20000 as a low geared popping reel, you may find it works OK. The low gear works fine when using a popper and there is more than one experienced GT fisherman that also uses them for stickbaits. Sometimes slow is good.

Regards,

Trev

Thanks for the reply Trevor. I will get a price on the gear set tomorrow. Fitting is not an issue. However if the gear set cost is still pricey I think I'll just take your advice and give the 20k a go.

Thanks.

Hi Jay,

It will depend on how often you will be using the reel specifically for popping?

Using a low gear reel for popping is more than achievable it just depends on your individual technique and wether you are willing to adapt it.

Also worth thinking about alternate uses for the 20000 as it is a brilliant jigging reel for doggies etc and the extra spool capacity makes it a good choice for tuna and other pelagics.

Mate my suggestion would be to take it down to your local water way give it a few throws and see how you go.

If it doesnt suit then maybe change it up.

I am sure there are more experienced guys on here who may reccomend different.

Cheers,

Thanks mate, I have ordered the gear set as its an easy changeover. So I will have the best of both worlds. 20k spool should be a good thing also.
