Title: Hots Gipang
Post by: Robert Palcak on May 13, 2009, 01:48:36 AM
Hi All

I'm looking at adding another rod to my collection in the not too distant future and like the look of the Hots Gipang's.
I want a dedicated large popper(around 150-200gram) rod that's fairly stiff.
I'm 5'7" tall, weigh in at around 87kg and am fairly fit... not trying to impress/attract anyone, just thought the info would be useful in rod choice  ;D
At this stage, the toss up is between the...
Hots Gipang 75XXH or the 79XH
I dont mind working hard for a big fish... but am I dreaming with the 75XXH ???
I'd probably prefer the 79XH for casting distance, but will it handle 200gm chuggers OK... and handle PE 10 pushed to the limit?
Another rod I'm also considering is the Ripple Fisher GT78XH... how would this rod compare to the Hots?
Very interested to hear anyone's opinion that has used any of the above... good and bad feedback is most welcome.

Cheers Rob

 Hi robert

earlier this year i was lucky enough to try both the hots 75xxh and ripple 78xh both worked well
when chugging a 150 cubera but the hots was a little shorter in casting distance

i did'nt hook up with the hots but had a short encounter using the 78xh and found it quite brutal,
i wasn't connected for very long but could feel this rod had massive stopping power when loaded up

both rods are quite light in weight but i think after a full days popping the ripple would leave you feeling
a little less pain from ease of casting, you will have no problems fishing pe 10 with 200gm poppers
on the ripple fisher as i think this rod is rated to pe 12  this is a serious weapon

      cheers john

No Sunny... My name's Rob not Gav! My rods are packed and finalised... I'm already way over flight weight limits! Just doing a bit of research for Santa Rudd's next Stimulous hand-out ;)

John - thanks for your input... that's exactly the type of info I'm looking for.

I have never fished with the Gipang 79XH but I have done some casting with it at the local reservoirs. My observations - 79XH is great for working small chuggers like cuberas and maybe GT2s, it doesn't handle the casting of 200g poppers well not to say work them.

I find that in general, Ripple rods are a tad overly forgiving, yes it cast easily but the tips are a tad too soft for working large chuggers. My choice would be the 78UHL when it comes to big chuggers from 180g onwards. (180g + size 10/0 trebles would mean casting a load of 220g altogether).

Just my personal opinion.
Cheers.

Richard, are you selling your UHL's? Brandon has always reckoned I could do with one.... it will do nicely when I'm tired of casting around my BG Jack.

Mick, you could have had that UHL but you tried to bargain with the seller and that gave me the time to talk him out of selling it!

You still trying to sell the 77XXXH!? I did offer to take it off your hands but you got "confused" on what it cost you!

You could become a very affluent man Richard  ;)

Anyone has tried the SP710H-SHP? Is it as different as they say it is from the SP78H?

AhGu ,

You tried mine several years ago , it's the same rod as 78H SHP but the 710H SHP comes with longer handle .

Still retain your 78UHL custom or has Mark taken the possession from you ?

Jon .

Hi Jon,

I'm still interested in looking at your 710 handle with view to a swap for my 78H handle, I gather it is the rear grip which is longer based on what I read on carpenter. Babel gives an interesting translation of the 710 spec. and based on what I read the longer handle gives the rod a slight power increase!??

I'm back in Jakarta at the moment, we had an interesting time in the coral sea, 25 to 35 knots was the normal and it made fishing hard work as one can imagine, the bait was up the first afternoon after that it went deeper and the GT's with it. We lucked out on weather this time, but I see incredible potential out there.

Cheers
Andy

Got to be Sportsmen's Bar in blok M ? However the other guys may think we are crazy bringing fishing rods into the place instead of billiard sticks .
