hi,
the lure Comfort Weight for this rod is listed as 120?160g, just wondering if this rod is able to cast & work a craftbait GT3 170g (without hoook) popper comfortably?
greatly appreciate any comment :)
-
Not long now lip song..
Hope you have been lifting some weights! It will be an intense trip!
-
Lip Song, in a nutshell, a GT79R will work a Craftbait GT3. A Carpenter TBL711 will work a GT3 as well but it isn't ideal and it won't chug as well as a Carpenter SP78EXH will do. It comes down to what applications you want the rod for. If you looking to work a range of lures, the rod will be a good all rounder. It will also be comfortable to fish with. On the other hand, if your thing is big chuggers and that is what the rod will be used for primarily, you might think about going to a 78PF. You need to be sure though that you get a rod you can handle when fighting a fish.

thanks brandon, once again for ur advice :)
i have just brought the GT79R, will be using it for the first time in NC, guess i will find out very soon whether if i am able to handle this rod or not. from my first popping experience in christmas island, don't think i am into big chuggers...yet ;D
just that now i'm deciding which popper to bring along for this rod. initially thinking was that if this rod is not able to cast/chug a GT3 well, i will bring less of it, and more of GT2 (150g without hooks). how i wish i can bring all, reality is, there is only so much i can pack in for my coming trip

weight is the enemy of most anglers going to NC or any other location. NC is very convenient for me because it is direct with Qantas and that means I can get away with 40 to 50kgs! ;D
If you haven't done much popping before, I'd suggest you focus on GT2s otherwise you'll be wanting a masseur within a day! You don't need dozens of lures, I'd suggest you lkook at something like 10 poppers and 10 stickbaits. If you intend to jig, you're doomed already with your luggage weight :'(
-
brandon, i will take ur advice into serious consideration

hi brandon,
this rod was chugging pretty OK with the GT3 170grams, during my trip, but the popper wasn't mine to keep....lost it to a petit GT in the end.
thanks for all the advice :)
-
The 79R is a good all rounder and it won't break you either so it is a suitable rod for most people. How on earth did you manage to lose it to a petite GT?! :D
-
leader snapped when e fish was at boatside, probably due to a mackerel attack previously..... :'(
-
lip song, what trip are u going on soon??

-
nice bend there .
hey what do you think of the GT79 rod ??
-
i like it alot, can cast it all day long :) like brandon said, it a good all rounder rod for both popper or stickbait.
-
hi guys
nomad is having a rod clearance on ripple fishers atm and there are a few 79 reversals available
standard and custom versions
cheers john
-
Yep they have a few GT 79R and 78PF's too....
I have the 79R and I really like it, but I also got to use one of John's 79PF at Shoalwater for a little bit and it was a very nice rod
-
hey scott love the bend in that 78PF when it loads up ;D and cant wait for you to
get up this way in may and have a cast with my new secret weapon (yamaga) :o :o
cheers
-
Yeah John it does have a sweet bend in it, I am sure the 79R looked good too, its just that everyone was too awed and stunned to pick up a camera and start shooting (before I fell on my back anyway)
Looking fwd to getting up there, May is looking iffy because work is hectic, but I will be up there at least once if not a few times over winter when I understand you guys get some reasonably stable weather, definately have to go for a fish when I do
I was tempted with the Nomad sale to get another rod, but I just bought half a dozen hammerhead and fisherman lures to donate to the GT's in New Cal....
-
If only i wasn't on the other side of the country id be there too boys! Ripple fisher sale? ill have to check that out!
I think im possibly the luckyest man alive... i just recieved a SW18 for my birthday!!! man i love that woman ;D ;D
-
If you want a second one, just buy her one for her birthday!
-
i can see it now neale, emma having coffee with her girlfriends bragging about her man
just buying her a brand spanking new stella :D :D
you need to post that pic of that big gt emma caught at shoalwater ;) ;)
-
if you end up getting divorced, it's not my fault!
-
brandon .
i am wondering do you have any ripple fisher rod ?? ;D ;D
hey rod owner who have one
can you tell me how long are the handle on the top where you hold them ??
cos i like the longer handle ::).
GT79R and GT78PF
-
this thread is getting more and more interesting...... ;D ;D
-
hey mick i own the ripple 78PF and just took some measurements for you
from butt to top of foregrip 80cm
the aft grip 45.5cm
foregrip 21.5cm
for me i am 5'10 and of a round build (low centre of gravity) :D :D
this configuration seems to fit quite well for me
scott has the 79R and i am sure he will be able to help you with some
measurements
i think with the ripple fisher custom rods you can get various types of
fore and aft grips and they may have different lengths but i am not certain
hope this helps :)

Sorry fella's, my mate and I just bought the last 2 GT79R's from Nomad.
We're going to the Andamans in 2 weeks time. We're doing it on the cheap and adventure styley(except for the rods) - hiring a local bloke who runs a couple of boats and will be doing it 'old school', no electronics etc. I'll post a report when we get back.
-
Those rods went pretty quick in that sale !
-
Anybody knows why NOMAD is clearing all of their Ripple Fisher stocks ? Are they preparing for a completely new items from the same brand or teplacing them with a new brand ?
Jon .

Pretty quick of you Dan....I missed them completely....only managed to secure the jigging rod....
Please let us know how the rod stand the abuse at Andamans..
Cheers

Pak Jon...I think they are just trying to help the economy by reducing their price to get people pull out their wallet and start spending.... ;D
-
Thanks Pak Surya ,
Should lower the charter rate instead of discounting the price of the rods and then the buyers use it elsewhere outside of Australia , just my opinion . ???
Jon .
-
I am not sure, but I know Ripple Fisher are releasing a few new models, so maybe clearing the way for those??
-
thats right scott they have a few new models and a shipment of rods coming in middle of next month
time to dust off the cobwebs from that wallet mate ;D ;D
-
The wallet is going into cardiac arrest mate after purchasing a digital SLR camera and some accessories today...as my wife said
"Jesus, even when you aren't buying actual fishing gear you are spending money on something to do with fishing!"
;D
-
I thought you might appreciate this photo I took last week at bugatti of my mate fighting a 30kg GT on a 79 Reversal. A great rod, that served him well on the trip with a number of 30kg fish. I used my 79 PF and found it to be quite a bit stiffer, especially the whip when loading up a cast.
-
Tell your pussy mate to get off the seat ;D :P
-
I can't see the photo but if you're referring to the seat at the back of the dories, I like that seat myself! :D
I think they still need to do a bit of work at the back of the dories otherwise it is only a matter of time before someone ends up going swimming. It's just too low and there is nothing to brace youself against.
-
Brandon...the photo is in the Contender near the transom door, he is sitting on the transon.
I agree with you on the dories, the first short session nearly saw me over the back . The folding ladder (now removed) nearly caused me some grief as did the back seats. Other than a few small details they are great machines to fish from.
Maybe I could swap them for my boat ;)
I fished with the reversal for a day and found it to be a great rod even though I was fishing it at the top of it's limits casting wise.
-
High sticky action there..
Nomad have new Ripple rods available in 2 and a half weeks, they will be at a new price again...Mmmm more expensive..
