Title: AG chain knot.
Post by: Lucas Nixon on July 08, 2015, 06:08:38 PM
On a recent trip I was exposed to the AG chain knot for the first time.

What are people's thoughts and more importantly experiences using this knot to connect 130lb - 200lb leader material to swivels and or solid rings etc.

Cheers,

Lucas.

I use it with flurocarbon leader for jigging only , important to get the half hitches going opposite ways I think.

I've heard mixed reports but my major question is why?

Just about everyone I know uses either a uni or an improved clinch and they're both pretty foolproof.

I think it is a ridiculous knot

Thanks for the thoughts and comments.

A mate of mine swears by the knot and uses it for jigging and surface fishing.

It looks like a whole lot of extra work for what souds like little to no extra benifit.

I personally use the improved clinch and am yet to have a knot fail on anything from bream and bass fishing all the way through to Tuna and GT fishing.

I was just wondering if I missed something and the AG chain knot was the "new best thing".

As always appreciate the comments of those in the know.

Cheers guys,

Lucas.

I am a fanatic about testing stuff. I tried the knot maybe 5 years ago when I first saw it. It was fairly strong comparatively but what I didn't like was after a full load cycle the knot would bend and stay bent. Sort of goofy.

As stated by others, there are just as good or better choices out there.

No Lucas, no weren't missing the next best thing......

A while ago...all the hype was that the Jigging Master AG Taiwan team.....was doing all there jigging promo's in NZ...and all round.....and that's the knot that was encouraged to jig with, and so on. I think some of the top water Japanese hopped on....and started tying this knot to there rigs......no advantage...maybe the knot has a small like a " spring in it, like a bunge cord... ???.

Uni...Improved Cinch.....is great  :).

It was here in NZ that I first saw the knot after Pony and the JM team passed through and I think a lot of us still use the AG chain knot for jigging , top water- I don't think the knots ever been popular over here . To me for jigging kingfish its still the knot for flurocarbon . That small bungy/spring effect helps for sure .

So the knot has "spring in it" even at the end of say two to three metres shock leader? ??? Anymore spring/stretch is going to effect hook set.

Hey guys,

Interesting comments for sure.

Not sure about the spring in the knot as I haven't used it but I'm assuming this assists with jigging?

Thanks for the info.

The absolute best "knot" I have ever tested is a ringed grommet with an aluminum crimp. I know, not a knot...

Other knots are nowhere even close in strength. The critical factors are:
- using the smallest sleeve possible for your leader regardless of its "rating"
- burn the tag end and snug against crimp prior to crimping
- use a calibrated pair of crimpers
- A BAD CRIMP IS WORSE THAN A BAD KNOT do not overcrimp

I rarely go more than #80 leader unless using heavy topwater in shallow water. I will bend a hook that is even well seated to the bottom of the gape at around #75-80 and not break the #80 Yo-Zuri FC.

4-Turn Uni knot for all terminal connections!

I'm with Amr. Uni knot all the way!

For me personally, intricate terminal knots are completely unnecessary! I'm fishing with 170lb (for pe8) and 200lb (for pe10) leaders purely for the extra abrasion resistance so knot strength isn't all that important when the lb rating of my leader far exceeds my needs.

A knot to solve a problem that never existed. It's a silly thing.

Oh well , the overall opinion seems to be its a waste of time , happy to know the uni has universal approval and I won't stress about tieing an ag chain knot again .

I've never had a problem with uni knot to terminal. If it's not broke, don't fix it!

Heavy leader (170 lbs) plus mono or fluro a three turn - double threaded uni works beautifully provided it cinched solidly. Remember the double threading!

Hey John.

Cheers for the input.

When you describe double threading is that in ref to the finish of the knot?

For me, I refer to double threading as the start of the knot. Before tying the uni, run the leader through the swivel then loop it around and through the swivel again. Then start tying the uni.

It doesn't feel right to start with as the mono tries to flex itself straight and ends up all over the swivel but once you've done the twist/loops etc and start to tighten the knot up, it doesn't take much to get the 2 loops sitting perfectly side by side.

Tested a whole bunch of knots when I was bored during a vacation a while back using the same line and hooks. Pulled the knots against eachother at least two times. The winner in that test was a double through the eye four turn uni. Later, I have found that different knots suits different lines better but my go to/default knot is still a double through the eye four turn uni knot...

A few years back there was a Youtube clip with the AG chain knot being tested against several other knots. The "problem" was that the AG chain knot was tied on a thicker wire that the other knots which of course is a huge benefit.

Hi Jussi,

The Four turn uni proves itself again.

Thanks mate.
