Title: Sunset Pic - Popping
Post by: Andre van Wyk on July 16, 2010, 09:26:08 PM
No big GT pic, but I shot this on a recent trip to Hellsgate Lodge in Mozambique in June...

Thought I'd share it with you guys...  perhaps Mods can set up a thread to post those "scenic" shots of all the amazing things we inevitably see during our fishing trips... goes to show being a fisherman isn't all about catching fish...

Thanks for the comments guys...

Hi Jon,

Unfortunately the popping was a little slow, us being there at the slowest time of the year.... I did have one estimated 40 to 50 kilo fish push my Cubera 180 for about 10 metres before sinking out of sight without commiting... left me jelly legged for sure, thought it was a shark when I first saw it come up behind the popper!!!

Cubera 150 did the trick on this fat nasty Cuda for my buddy Greg though that morning...

Hellsgate is an incredible place, the potential is amazing.... I can't wait to get back there in the summer, there is a 50 Kilo fish with my name on it just waiting for me!

A couple more scenic shots

Livebaiting off the beach at the Hellsgate Gap at last light.....plenty 40 kilo plus fish taken this way here...

I divert a little bit here but it seems cudas have a really bad reputation in some parts.
Over here in Fiji they are highly regarded as table fare.
Any one care to share their opinions.

My local popping spot. A few members here have thrown poppers into those crazy currents.

I have eaten cuda in thailand and it a great firm white flesh - but your dicing with death as you can get very seriously ill. forgotten what the condition is called but its based on the cuddas eating the smaller reef fish that feed on coral which is poisionous - over time this poison builds up in the cudda and the food chain and if you eat and old or large cudda or any other top feeding predator etc you risk poisioning and it aint nice. Eat the little fella's and you should be fine - but dont quote me -just what i have been told by various skippers. This can also be common in any predators who feast on coral/reef bait fish.

It's called Ciguetera

Some great shots here

That is a brilliant pic Pete, well done. Those thinner upper clouds give this photo a sort of dreamy feel. All round awesome image.

The only sunset pic I have involving GT fishing is this one, a pic of my brother helping me land a writhing GT from the rocks late one arvo
