Hi Vincenzo,

I hope you don't mind me asking, why the need for 170lb line fishing 12-14kg of drag? I would have no qualms fishing 80 lb line at that drag setting. For 16-17kg drag I would normally use 130lb, but I think even with 100lb I would not expect the line to burst.

The reason I ask is that I have played with 170lb varivas before, and it is bloody awful to cast! A 7ft 5 rod would not help either!

Yes sure!

I used 170 lb the biggest line i found! because i don't need to cast so far; i was fishing on a Sea montain and wrecks.

But a bigger line give me more security to stop the fish as soon as possible  :D and the line is consumed less.

I'd hate to be fishing Vincenzo's spots with Varivas 80lb, any shock loads would mostly end in tears.

I have been doing a lot of shopping since my last trip and will be taking the combos below on my next one:

DJ83MH, Stella 10000 w 16000 spool PE8
CV79/40, Stella 10000 w 16000 spool PE8
MH79XH, Stella 18000 PE10
WV83XH RD-X, Stella 18000 w 20000 spool PE12 ( If it's still available on pay day!) as I want to try some no line out, locked drag fishing for a day to see if I can handle it!

I will also bring along the 10000 spools with some PE6 and 3 or 4 spare 16000 spools of PE8 and PE10 for good luck.

Lots of potential options but the ones I use most often these days would be:

Carpenter MH80H with SW18000 PE8 or Dogfight PE10
Carpenter CV79/40 with SW10000 with 160000 spool PE8
Carpenter EP82/38 with SW10000 with 160000 spool PE8
Carpenter  DJ83MH with SW18000 PE8 or Dogfight PE10
Ripple fisher GT82 with Twinpower 12000 PE8
Carpenter LGM SP80M with SW10000 PE6

And Ben.. locked drag? Stop it!  I know you have arms like industrial levers but you will just damage yourself.

A 35 kg fish on locked drag could equal $1,000+ of broken rod and a large medical bill  ::)

One of the Nomad guides, Ed Lester used to fish with a heavier drag than anyone I have ever seen. A 30kg fish at Bugatti almost had him swimming. We had a double hook-up so the boat was going in all directions. The fish pulled him from the front of the boat all the way to the back and if he hadn't been able to hook his leg around the cage at the back of the dory, he would have been swimming!

When fishing for GTs of a decent size, no line out is a conceptual fantasy and no more than that.

Sounds like a challenge! I may reasses and change my attack to "minimal" line out!

Yep, I totally agree with Brandon. The "No Line Out" stuff goes into the rubbish bin of over-macho nonsense that we hear far too much of in our sport.

Ben, fishing a heavy drag is definitely very different to locked drag. Give that a go for sure just so you know what it feels like. I reckon you might just think it takes the enjoyment out of your fishing, but sometimes a case can be made for it - big fish in very shallow water for example.  You are a big fella so it would be amusing to watch a GT pull you from one end of the boat to the other  ;D ;D .

I doubt the "no line out" concept was meant to be strictly literal, I think it may relate more to a figurative concept in nasty conditions where bust-offs are too common.

As is indicated in earlier comments I think heavy drags do have a place and for those that can handle them, but I also much prefer to let a nicely balanced outfit put most of the brake on the fish rather than me taking the beating.

Conversely, one of the more enjoyable parts of the GT trip for me is that occasional meeting with the GT that employs the "no line in" policy ;) ;)

Conversely, one of the more enjoyable parts of the GT trip for me is that occasional meeting with the GT that employs the "no line in" policy ;) ;)

Too right Andy, and those are the ones that keep us coming back for more!!

My current set ups are:

DJ83MH & Stella 10000FA with 16000 and 20000 spools with 60lb Jerry Brown and 100lb Jerry Brown Respectively
CV79/40 & Stella 10000SW with JM 16000 Monster Spool and Handle Arm with 100lb Jerry Brown
RF 79H & Stella 18000SW with JM Handle Arm and Varivas GT Max PE 10

Feel like I've got pretty much all my bases covered with the above
The 79H is a sublime heavy chugger and handles the larger ( 200gram and up ) stickbaits well enough too, and is a wicked fish fighting tool.
The DJ83MH is an incredible all rounder, even though its supposedly "Older" Carpenter technology, it cast a mile and a half, is a great all day rod, works both Stickbaits and small to medium poppers well, and very easy on the angler, both casting and fighting fish.
The CV79.40 is the newest, and most prized of the stable, and a rod I've been after for ages... matched the 10KSW with the JM spool, I'm pretty sure this will start becoming my most used set up.... the ultimate stickbait rod for GT's in my opinion...

Ocean Revolution Widowmaker and Stella 10000 Fa with extra 10000 and 20000 spool.

When we were in Florida fishing a wreck for Goliath grouper in 40 feet of water my friend was handed a 130 lbs trolling rod with a 50TLD 2 speed shimano reel with the drag locked and spooled with 130lbs mono....
He is 110kgs in weight and a pretty strong guy but after his first strike and (shortlived) fight with a grouper I could see the fear in his eyes as the fish nearly pulled him over the side 3 times :)

I am in agreement with Andre on the CV.

I bought one of these when they first came out and having tried several set-ups in between find that this is my 'go-to' rod.

CV79/40RF.SHP in SP78EXH handle
Stella 10K-XG with MC works handle, SOM 16000 NL spool and varivas PE8
using stickbaits and/or smaller faced poppers between 100-150gm

CV79/40 with a SW10000 with 16000 spool gets a 5 star rating from me also.

Like you Andy, my only little quibble with the Coral Viper is the slightly too short handle.  The only normal length handle I have which it fits nicely into is my Ripple Fisher GT82. Feels weird putting a Carpenter rod into a Ripple Fisher handle though!

New Saltiga 5000H pe8 YGK WX8

Hi Jeff... that's interesting. Can you get enough PE8 onto a Saltiga 5000 spool?
Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Brandon Khoo on February 07, 2012, 04:55:53 PM
Saltiga 5000 has an almost identical spool capacity to SOM 16000. I know that is not what it says on paper but I have moved line from one spool to the other. It's lineball.
Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Mark Harris on February 07, 2012, 06:09:50 PM
Wow.. that's good info Brandon and I must say I am totally surprised.  I had no idea the Saltiga 5000 held so much.  If it holds 230-240 metres of PE8 like a SOM 16000, that makes it a decent proposition for GT fishing.

The Daiwa spec sheet says you only get 300 metres of PE5!

Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Brandon Khoo on February 07, 2012, 06:21:56 PM
Its very conservative - as I said, I have transferred two full spools of line from 16000s to the Daiwa 5000.
Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Andy Rowe on February 07, 2012, 07:29:00 PM
The Daiwa 5000 line cap. is surprising, I wonder if SOM will design a spool for it that will enhance capacity as it did for the Stella 10k? That type of reel set up would certainly become more attractive especially with the SOM drag system on a salti!!!

Mark, how snug is the fit from your LC handle to the CV??

I was thinking of getting another SW10000 , but this revelation makes me think very seriously about a Saltiga 5000H instead which costs less than an SW10000 plus the compulsory after market spool.

If it already has that line cap Andy, I guess there far less need for a SOM after-market spool than there is a with a SW10000.

On the CV/GT82 fit..... pretty snug but not quite perfect. I need to wax the CV male ferrule.  So the female Ripple Fisher ferrule is very slightly too big. Not enough to worry about though and with a bit of wax it feels right.

Mark/Andy

Can you elaborate a little on the handle length issue on the CV? I've missed any info on this issue, and find it a bit concerning....

Can you let me know your thoughts.. too short, too long??? I was led to believe the rod is perfect... now a little concerned....

I've got pretty long arms ( ape man factor lives well and stong within the Dre! ), am I going to possibly have an issue with it?

Thanks
Dre

Please don't be put off Andre. The rod is a beauty and any quibble I have is very minor.

Both Andy and I are over 6 feet and I guess his issue is the same as mine - the handle feels a tiny bit short. It is shorter than other equivalent rated Carpenter rods by about 4 cm.  And that difference is all in the foregrip.

I reiterate again that this is not a big issue at all and should not put anyone off buying this beautiful rod.

Hi Dre,

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the CV length, it's just a personnal thing for me, being 194cm tall and the rod being so damn light in the first place I thought it would be a nice modification to the rod. I am still in 2 minds about ordering a custom handle for the CV from carpenter. Expensive, yes, but I just like using it so much.

Mark, re the potential of even more line cap. on the salti. If SOM did a spool for it with the equvalent 20 to 25% increase in line cap that the SW got, I would buy one. Not only for GT's but it would be nice for PE6 or PE7 on big tuna!!

Cheers for the replies boys...

I'm 6'1", and like I said, the Ape Man factor is pretty high with long oranguatang arms, so was a little concerned... but no doubt she'll be a pleasure and a beauty to fish...

Thanks again for the informed info...

I think the grip length issue is exacerbated by the fact that the hypalon grip finishes about 15  - 20mm short of the end of the butt......not sure why they did that!

It probably wouldn't be too hard to replace the foregrip with a new one that extends to the end of the butt....that will help a little bit.   Like you guys though, mine fits nice and snug into my 78EXH butt, only problem is........ I cant use both rods at the same time.

Haha, Peter i have the first edition which is full Eva and it still annoys me.

I'd really like to see Carpenter do somethiing more with this popular CV series, the taper and blank are so light, strong  and user friendly. In the carpenter thread Tak indicated that Kenji san was testing a proto type 2" longer CV but it appears to have been shelved for the time being. A CV711/40 and a CV710/43 would be nice additions to this line.. ;) ;)
only problem is........ I cant use both rods at the same time.

Peter, I had that debate with Tak and Brandon in the Carpenter forum a while ago in respect of MH80H. I don't like that feature either and in fact had the grip re-buillt on mine to full cover the ferrule. But, it is down to which factory Carpenter use to make the butt sections and not specific to particular models. For example I have seen DJ83MH with full hypalon grip and with the version that finishes short and leaves the female ferrule exposed.

I have just purchased a 2010 Saltiga 5000 and there is a point to watch on them. The metal drag washers are punched out and not machined. Mine were so bad that it required a lot of honing to get them flat. I have been happy withe reel other than this.

Also SOM do make a NL spool for the new models -  see previous post

http://www.gtpopping.com/forum/index.php?topic=4976.0 (http://www.gtpopping.com/forum/index.php?topic=4976.0)

SOM quote a 15kg drag rating with the spool full of line, while Daiwa quote 15 kg drag with spool empty. A spool rated at 15 kg empty will have approx 7.5 kg drag when the spool is full (there is a formula for this). I have not checked any of the manufacturers claims on these ratings.

Thanks for that Les. I had read that before and it is a disappointing feature for sure.

I have been sitting on the fence about buying a new Saltiga for a long while now, and was focused most on a 6500H.  This slightly startling revelation about the the very high line cap on a 5000H is though very interesting, and just might make me take the plunge.

I have none of the Shimano versus Daiwa baggage as used a Dogfight happily for many years alongside various Stellas and it is still running well.

My combo, yamaga atlas 76/6 and ep85/36 with a 5000h, I'm looking at getting a 10000 with a som spool. In the near future. I have had no problems with the 5000h and the highest I have fished it was 11kg and it handled this flawlessly, I can not fault the reel, I'd just like to try a stella of comparitive size so I can have an informed decision on the stella/saltiga debate

Hi Les, thanks for the link, it looks like the SOM addition would add no extra line cap on the  salti 5000, but as you say the daiwa drag may still a question mark.

This washer issue was the same with the previous saltiga reel versions, if true on the new salti I find it hard to see why Daiwa have gone to all the trouble of making a new real with all it's new fangled lubrication etc. and left in this piece of low quality work in the drag assembly.

Hi Andy

I have a Z4500 Daiwa and the metal drag washers are machined and anodised albeit rather thin. They appear soft as I have had to re lap them as the anodising became scored.  From your experience it appears they have changed mid stream to stamping.

I will send an email to Daiwa Australia, but do not expect a miracle reply.

I am in the process of getting an engineer to machine some flat washers that a slightly thicker from 440C.

Mark,
I noticed that you use PE8 with Stellas, but PE10 with Saltigas for the same rod set up (so I assume for the same conditions). What is the reason for that?

No real logical reason for that Dimitrii. I guess to me the Dogfight just feels like a gruntier reel, particularly in the handle and bail arm departments.

As much as anything else though, I rarely fish find fishing as heavy as PE10 necessary and my two Dogfight spools just happen to be loaded with PE10. I do sometimes carry around a spare Stella 20000 spool loaded with PE10, but I don't ever remember actually using it.

Thanks for your explanation, Mark.

I can not help asking..... I have just gave away my Tokara 60 which I used mainly with stickbaits and now looking for a stick bait GT rod. And you have very nice choice of rods which I think are good for stickbaits - I am just choosing from CV79/40, EP82/38 and DJ83MH and you have all of them! Can you help me with choosing?
I am thinking of DJ83MH most of all because it is the only one which can be used with PE10, and the only doubt is that it is kind of "old" generation of Carpenter, though it is also very proven... What are the strong points of CV and EP in comparison to DJ? I would appreciate your help very much.
Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Mark Harris on March 10, 2012, 01:10:20 AM
Hi Dmitrii

If you want a pure stickbait rod, I would not go for DJ83MH.  I see that rod as more of an all rounder - indeed one of the very best all round GT rods ever made in my opinion.  It will certainly handle stickbaits but there are better specialist options. Great rod but possibly not what you are looking for.

As for CV79/40 versus EP82/38.... take your pick really. But  I would not be comfortable fishing PE10 with either of them.  CV79/40 is a little stiffer tipped in my opinion but I have read views which disagree with that.  Obviously EP82/38 will cast further, although I have always thought CV79/40 casts further than you might expect for its length.  I do not think you would be disappointed with either option.  If using medium sized chuggers as well as stickbaits with the rod is a likelihood, then I would say CV79/40 is more suited.

If you want a specialist PE10 stickbait rod though, I do not think Carpenter make one (yet) and your options would be limited to Ripple Fisher Ultimo range.

All just my views of course and other may disagree.

I really cannot speak for the Ultimo range but others here certainly could.

I am not sure your decision is that hard as either of EP82/38 or CV79/40 would be a great decision!

Seems a bit unlikely that what is a PE12 spectra line in diameter would cast as well as a PE8 diameter dyneema line  ???.

I long ago black-listed PowerPro from my kit box after several casting explosions of the 80lb and some expensive lures lost (and I saw exactly the same thing happen to another angler just 2 weeks ago). Would be interesting to know if this ultra heavy stuff has the same problem. It may be that  it is so thick that the casting load stress is not such a problem.

Hi Mark

Your quote on the other thread is causing alittle of concern now (Finally, I would personally counsel against using PowerPro anywhere in the 60 to 80lbs range. Infamously bad at absorbing shock load and prone to explosions.  JB and TufLine XP are quite excellent though.
)

Kinda of worried now but so far during all the dry casting, nothing tragic yet.

As for Jay's doubt on whether my 75kg powerpro can cast further than pe8 avani. Please take note of the below differences which may cause "unfairness" in distance when comparing the 2 lines:

1) 75kg powerpro in 18000 , avani pe8 in SOM 16K spool
2) MH79XH with the 18K Stella, SP80 or HIIB Smith or Komodo with 16K Stella
3) Direct 130 lbs leader on 18K, direct leader to uni knot with 2 - 3 feet of bite leader on 16K

All these dry casting are done on the same day.

I'm new to popping and am open to all comments.

Thank you

Hey Charlie. In this forum there seems to be a sort of unwritten rule of not bagging products unless you have significant negative first-hand experience. Sadly, with PowerPro I do.  With 2 different spools (both genuine and both purchased from a leading Shimano dealer), I had a lot of casting explosions (either 5 or 6 occurrences) - the line just snapping under casting load.  Both spools were 80lb.  Cost me two expensive lures - one sinking, so no hope - and one a GT3 170 which ended up behind a rock in an area way too dangerous to take the boat into.

Less than 2 weeks ago I saw this happen to another very experienced angler.  When I saw the line on his spool I even said... "that is Tuf Line, right?".  Sadly it was 80lb PowerPro and within 30 minutes, exactly the same thing happened to him, but we were able to recover the lure.

For the type of GT sight fishing I do, I use a Stella 18000SW with 200lb and 300lb JB Hollow looped to 500lb Momoi Diamond.  The rod is a Patriot Desiggn Black Diamond.  The 500lb cuts quite often.  We sight fish in tons of cover, pilings from a pier.

For plugging,  I use a Tuna Sniper 60/80 with a Stella 8000SW with a 10000 spool filled with Varivas 65lb.

I haven't had any problems with PowerPro up to 150lbs.

For smaller GT I have Stella 5000SW and 4000's paired with custom Outcasts and older custom Fenwicks and Rainshadows.

Mark,
It sounds like you may need a handline n tie it off to the side of the boat when u get the bite! Using that heavy line seems like overkill when the max drag from the spool of a filled Stella is around 20kgs. You won't snap pe12 in a straight line let alone your pe20!
Title: Re: What Combo Do You Use!? (GT Fishing & Popping)
Post by: Mark Gonsalves on March 25, 2012, 03:09:26 PM
We never have to "break off".  We never get snagged.  The GT routinely grab our baits and dive for the pilings and "break off" for us.  On an occasion they will run "out" instead of down, then we have a chance to tire them out.  Very rare.  The Stella"s drag is set at about 30lbs, just about the point where I will get pulled into the water cause I am sitting on the edge of a pier.  The usual 40-50lb GT will take, maybe, 5 to 10 yards in the tug of war.  If the GT decides to run out then we loosen the drag.  All the larger GT we sight hook have ALL run straight under us into the pier piling except for one.

Using a handline and/or rope wouldn't be sporting to me or my friends.  We aren't fishing from a boat.  We are on a pier about 5' above the GT and tease them with live or dead baits. Watching the GT come and devour our baits is really exciting.  Always white knuckles when the initial circling of the bait begins.  For bait we use 2-5lb ladyfish, leatherbacks, small jacks up to 2lbs, Pacific threadfin, goatfish, scads, and surgeonfish.

I regularly land base cast around Sydney ledges for Kings, so have acquired the following over the past 12mths and am happy with all of it:

Rods: Zenaq Fokeeto 83-7, Saltiga Dorao 80TN, new Saltiga Dorado MO83
Reels: Stella 10000SW, Twinpower 5000
Line: 2x10000 spools with 65 and 50lb JB solid (soon to purchase JM16000 spool for 80lb), 2x5000 spools with 20 and 30lb JB solid

But now, we have just booked a trip to Rarotonga at the end of May for a week and I am in the market for my first popping stick in the prospect of my first GT, and the inevitable addiction that is sure to follow. I have read a lot of the info on this site and am still a bit undecided. CV79 is looking very tempting as long as it isn't too similar to the 83-7 re stick baits, and also it may too short for popping off the stones (no dedicated boat rods here, I wouldn't be able to help myself!) What has grabbed my attention is the FCL Labo UCB 80EXT as a more dedicated popping stick with a few inches extra (same length as 80TN). I'd be keen to hear opinions on these two rods compared? Like others here, I'm also really keen to purchase a Salty 5000H, or maybe the new Catalina 5000H loaded with PE8 in comparison to the Stella.

Good informative thread also!

Carl, not sure you should be comparing a Carpenter rod to an FCL Labo rod.  Different price range altogether.

If you have the budget for a CV7940 but want some extra length for shore casting, then Carpenter have other superb options such as Discovery Journey 83MH and the whole Endless Passion range.

Good points Mark, I've used the EP85 and absolutely love it, but I can't justify another PE6-8 stick bait rod in addition to the Fokeeto 83-7. Price isn't the issue, however the FCL 80EXT appears to be a good buy for what it can do (Fishhead give it a good rap on their sponsor pages).

I am leaning towards an 8' rod due to land based popping requirement also. The Ripple GT82 Longcast looks interesting, and I'd be very appreciative for other members more learned advice.

Cheers

CV79/40 is not so different from EP82/38 in the stiffness of its tip Carl.

From your further description of what you are looking for, Carpenter Discovery Journey 83MH would be a better option than CV79/40 I think.  Really nice rod which will help with casting distance from land and handles chuggers up to 150 grams very capably.

Ripple GT 82 is also a fine rod and one I really enjoy using.
