Title: rod tube/carrier -- recommendations and where to buy locally?
Post by: Brandon Khoo on May 07, 2007, 05:29:56 PM
Two of my rod tubes have failed to stand up to the airline handlers this year. I can't believe how hard they are on them  >:(

As I result, I need to get another one. I was thinking of getting a big Plano Airliner with the wheels as the standard large size Plano tubes can barely manage two popping rods. can anyone suggest any alteernatives and where I can get one locally?

Jon - it looks terrific but i don't think it is availale in Australia, is it? I know Randy stocks a really good looking one that looks quite similar to this as well

last resort is a stainless steel 3mm tube with pad locks on the ends..... ;D

Otherwise when you check in, get them to put fragile stickers all over it and special instruction to be extra careful. Ive had my jig sticks in standard rod tubes and there's no problem with them so far......."touch wood"  :-\

I've had a good run for a few years and then two trip and two damaged rod tubes. Bloody hell - on my Vanuatu trip, the guys managed to break the clip off completely!

I'l try with the "fragile" and see how I go. Thanks

Had a rod on Virgin last year to Sydney, at the check in a guy [staff] found a more robust tube than mine and covered it in fragile stickers, I couldn't find it at the Sydney baggage collection until I was shown a fragile pick up desk ;D. It's a pity all airlines don't do that.

In Perth mine was brought out and placed on the floor next to the luggage collection "belt"  So there are some dedicated people there.

We'll do the righty by you Brandon, we love you long time.

If you fill it with rods and lures it'll be much more affordable anyway.

We did the homework on RV-Innos a while back. If you want to help us bring in a 20' container, it works out... otherwise no go.

The freight issue will not be a problem from a reputable tackle store on the east coast, Brandon.
About $10

Guys,

I have had similar issues carting rods up and back to the Gulf.

I solved the problem with lengths of plimbing PVC pipe with a solid cap at one end and the screw inspection cap utilised at the other end.

It is also simple to put a latch and small lock on the screw cap. Whilst it would not stop anyone that seriously wants to get to the rods.

I have made several of these up for different length rods.

Piece of foam in each end stops the rods sliding back and forward and roll rods up in the plastic bubble wrap, have not had one mark on any of them.

They can comfortable carry 4 jig rods, and I place the reels in a Pelican case.

Costs approx $20 per tube, need the PVC glue to make water tight.

Hope this has been of some assistance.

Regards Paul

i have used the plano airliner for a while now with no problems. it telescopes easily, locks ok(have to use a long shank TSA lock here) and is big enough to stuff a fair amount of clothes in it to pad the rods. the best thing about it is the wheels on one end. when i load that sucker up, it get awfully heavy to lug around by the handles. just tilt it over and roll it.

Hi steve, I am new in this forum and has been browsing around for sometime.
I just have a look at that japanese rod case and I am quite interested in having one of those.
Do you have the website or a reference for that ? Is there any agent in Spore or KL selling it?
How many rods can it store ?

Many thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, I think it holds around 6 to 8 rods including a special corner for butt joints

I can't see the picture but you're obviously referring to a Carmate. I got one of those too!

Carmate model came from SMITH in Japan with my other products.
I do not retail though you could contact one of my retailers for a price.

For youself to import problem is it's expensive to fright from Japan or anywhere due to it's lenght have to use Fedex or UPS and by itself will cost you probably $150 plus AU to get it here.

USA store has listed at US$189.95 plus your freight.

If you're looking to carry 5+ rods, your choices are the Carmate, the big Bazuka or the Plano Airliner. I am sure there are other options in the market though that I haven't seen. The Carmate is an excellent rod carrier. It's a little fussy getting the rods in but it is solid and very well made. It can also carry quite a number of rods but you need to do a fair bit of manoeuvring around to get them in. Personally, once you're getting to 7+ rods, I'd suggest the big Plano Airliner. This one is so easy to get the rods into and believe me, with that number of rods, you will really appreciate the wheels on the case.

For me, I use the Plano 35102 if I only need to carry 2-3 rods. I use the Carmate if it is 3-5 and I use the Airliner for anything more.

hey what about plano 4588 rod tube .. i am thinking about that one for me .. so  that is simple to the Plano 35102 but it can hold 8-7' rod,s .. so i think 3-5 rod will be fine .. what do you think ?? and i will warp it with bubble warp ...  so is plano 4588 all okay ?? any suggest ...

Mick, I've never used a 4588 before but I am familiar with the model.

Just remember that when the manufacturers talk about rod capacity that they are not referring to GT popping rods that have that massive stripper guide. You can half the capacity for GT and jigging spinning rods.

btw - if you start bring the big Plano Airliner onto the floatplane for a Nomad charter, you will be unpopular with the captain. These rod tubes are so big that they will not fit under the seats and have to be placed down the little corridor of the plane. A couple of Airliners will completely block the corridor.

I have been using this http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0032066011580a.shtml for about 10 years now. No problems at all (did I just jinx myself?!). I tape some masking tape at the top and over the latches whenever I check it in. It has been with me on at least 15 flights passing through Singapore, London, Jakarta, Maldives, Hamburg, LAX.....

I like it because I believe that the round shape is still the strongest. Also, it is light. That means less likelihood of excess baggage charges.

Hiya all. :-)

The 35102 is only 90mm wide while the 45102 is 110mm, the 4588 is 130mm and the Airliner is 210mm.

I went for a home made 100mm PVC pipe with screw cap on one end, it's pretty tough and has made a few flights between Perth and Nhulunbuy. The last trip I found the glued end cracked so cut it off to fit another screw on cap. I drilled a hole in the edge of the caps for a self tapping screw to stop the caps coming off at the wrong time. It comfortably fits a 7ft rod plus a bit of foam at each end, and some bubble wrap for lengthways padding. 2-3 heavy popping rods would fit OK, but not 5 or 7...
Best,
Sam
