Plait instead of a bimimi to form a double
May 12, 2007, 06:41:53 AM
I obviously have too much time but I must have spent a couple of hours last night trying to tie this double effectively. Has anyone used one of these instead of a bimimi? I know George has a preference for a plait over a bimimi but I don't think he ties his this way. For anyone who has used it, what is the knot strength like?

I had a fair bit of trouble with this as I struggled to get the plait as tight as i would like it.

I have used them, but in braid I have found it hard to make them tight enough to stop the knot from slipping down from the top. Be interested to hear how George makes them work. Tying it with mono is easier for me, and would be my double knot of choice for that. It is also really easy to make long doubles with the plait which can be hard to do with a bimini. The strength is equal to a bimini, it is considered to be one of the few 100% knots.

I agree with Duncan - i also could not tie the plait in braid the way it's supposed to be tied.

Stick with the Bimini Brandon ;D

I think I might have to. I can't get it to bite enough and it keeps on slipping. It also takes me about five times longer to tie!!

I agree too..... :)

Plait is for mono and bimini for braid - those fly guys sure do know how to tie the best knots, I can assure you Duncan is an absolute guru in the knot tying department....... ;D  he makes it look sooooo easy....... He recently showed me his rissole finish on a bimini- awsome...

and this is not a paid add... ::)

I dont use plaits very often in braid, finishing the plait can be difficult due to the amount of grip that braid has as it slips over itself. I tend to splice a loop into the braid for about 50-60cm. It seems very strong, and tends to fail in the main braid.

I do use plaits for heavy nylon, when I topshot nylon for heavy tackle. The memory of nylon makes it a very forgiving knot with a bit of spring in it.

I've post a pic with the spliced loop above, and a plait below.

Practice will make perfect here guys.
Plait is an awesome knot in braid, and it is tight, if tied well. Only problem is that it takes more time than bimini. Both knots were originated for mono, they just happened to work in braid when most others didn't.

Neil,

Are there any other double knots retaining near 100% BS that have been developed for Braid? I would think not since i haven't heard of any with all the discussion we have...

I have been mucking around with Allan from Hawaii on GT knots for a while now, and am losing my belief that bimini is best. I must point out that I still use bimini's because they still are probably the best all round knot, easy and quick to tie.
I guess it's nearly time to do another knot expo with what we know now. Will keep you posted.

That would be great Neil. I have been playing around with a few myself and it would be good to share some findings.
