Title: SOM Conversion Kit/Right Hand Handle!
Post by: Kurt de Villiers on February 03, 2012, 06:56:51 PM
Hi Guys,

I just recently bought a Stella 20K for jigging, without realising that the SOM handle it came with was only compatible on the left hand side!

I'm starting to panic as, I'm off a trip on the 14th and need this issue rectified.
I've just found out that a 'conversion kit' may be an option...?

Does anyone know of this or have one or know where i may get one.
Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

SOM makes right side handles only by special order, so it is not simple to find them. I have not heard of the conversion kit.

Here is the link for japanese online shop, where you can buy right side handle. 2 pcs available. http://shop.yumetenpo.jp/goods/d/veinz.net/g/som343/index.shtml (http://shop.yumetenpo.jp/goods/d/veinz.net/g/som343/index.shtml)

The picture shows left handed one, but this page is for right sided handle.

Until reading your post Kurt I had no idea you needed a special fit for the SOM Handles... just assumed there would be an adapter bar of some sort.

This must come up a LOT with Aussies, so many of whom use right hand wind.

Sadly the SOM website states clearly that the Stella compatible handles are left-hand wind only, so I am doubting that there is any conversion kit.

Hi Mark, yes, i too have just read that on SOM's website. I know you can get right hand ones, i think though that they are custom made to order.
however, i am in engineering, so i might spend some time this weekend in the workshop and turn something up to suit, as there is a 6mm cap screw in the end of the SOM handle, thus allowing the left handed thread section to be easily removed.

i have just contacted some mates currently in Japan at the trade show, so we'll see if they make a 'break through'.

cheers

Hi Kurt,

Do the new JM power handles screw both sides? I have been led to believe they are threaded both left and right.
Fish head have a few in stock and they might be worth a look?

I've got a right handed SOM handle which I ordered from Jdmtackle. Saltywatertackle (sponsor) stocks SOM and might be able to help. I'm personally not particularly impressed with the design/quality control of some of their gear given the $$$.

The right hand winds are very rare, good luck getting that changed!
