Title: 30 lb setups, what are you guys using?
Post by: Jon Hsu on October 11, 2011, 06:00:09 PM
I've been reading more and more on the expeditions forums and see that a lot of people switch up to light gear of about 30 lb equipment catching like 10kg fish.
I see a lot of soft bait usage and also a lot of different rods!
I haven't found a light gear thread so maybe you guys would like to chime in.
I usually just end up throwing out smaller poppers or swimbaits but they're usually pretty hard to work consistently.

I run a Kaiser 70m with a twinpower 5000sw with 30lb.  ;D
Super fun rod for throwing everything from soft plastics to poppers and sticks up to 60g.

I used a Daiwa Certate HD Custom spooled with 35lb Jerry Brown on either my Saltiga Combi Jerk or my Saltiga 70s.

I see some people using soft plastics on jigheads.
Effective?
Most of the time I just throw the smaller Halco poppers out there, lots of fun on blue trevally or maybe a small grouper or snapper.
Wonderful setups, I'm currently using G.Loomis GL2 Hot Shot with Penn 430SSg on 20lb powerpro.

Hi Brandon ,

You've got a perfect match , so many BC75MLRs passed my hands but none I can't sell within days n most are mated exactly with the one reel you have .

I just got a 69MHR-SHP so the 75MLR gets a rest next week from a trip for the first time in a very long time.

Hi Brandon,

That sure is a great rod but remember it's got alot to do with what lure is attached to it that will determine whether you get to use it or not! I hope you decide to pack a couple "Anna K's" for new cal!!!
 ;) ;) ;)

I am running a Zenaq Fokeeto Twitch 70-3 with a hyper certate 4000 at the moment....thinking about changing reels although the hyper certate is nice. It is a really nice light outfit to use. Can't remember what 30lb line I have on it

Brandon tackle world just got em in the other day in all sizes. Let me know if you want some and I'll send em up express. You know they get the bites..... if the only one that sticks is a long (poor mans marlin) tom!! Lol

Hi Brandon ,

I hv the older model , BC66MHR-SHP which has a shorter handle ,it's a stiifer rod than BC75MLR n I use it to handle big blackbass when my baitcaster outfits are just too light for the estuary species . BTW , good luck in NC with Konishi-san n Kawachi-san .

I fish a much longer rod than most here on my 30lb set up... as most of my light fishing is chasing surface roving Kingfish on small spoons and lures which require a loooong cast with lighter lures...

So I'm running a Berkley Air 9' XH with a Certate 3500HD and YGK Ultra PE 3..... the Certate is a sublime reel, but a little slow, so I'm looking to switch it up for something faster at some point, but probably not gonna shell out for a Stella/Twinpower, will go with a Stradic 5000 for pure irons spinning and keep the certate on the side for fishing plastics for bigger targets, as well as on a 100gram jigging stick ( JM Sabre 100 )...
