160g or 200g Gamma for Monster Hunter 80H
October 31, 2014, 08:38:24 PM
Hi I would like to gather some feedback on which weight gamma will fit the MH80H better? Or at least what are the pros and cons of each when paired with the rod and 130/170lbs fisherman leader.

Hope I get some better response this time as I did not have much feedback for 2 of my post previously. Thanks for the help! :'(

Hi Alex - it will fish both quite comfortably ... 250's are more of a lob and you wont get the distance but upto 200's are fine!

I believe there is not much problem in the casting part, how about working the lure? which will have a better presentation?

Ideally you would not use either with MH80H.

However, of the two, the 200 is easiest with MH80H.  I often use Gamma 200s with MH80H purely because I don't really carry a specialist stickbait rod for lures that big.

I used the Diablo Gamma 160 on my first trip to Niihau and was easy to throw all day and work consistently and produced one GT and numerous trevallys and I didn't want to go back to a popper so I went back to Pat V for another one and I recently bought the 200 gamma also but didn't use it yet.On the 160 Gamma set up I used 2 singles on the front and a Jobu single on the back.My Daiwa reel was set up with 130lb braid,180 shock + 250 leader

Hi Mark,

So what is actually ideal for the MH80H?
I have not started any popping trip yet so I can only do some reading up and asking tons of questions.

Hi Bill,

So what rod are you using to cast the 200g gamma?
I heard that the 200g gammas might be a little hard to work it correctly. Let me know how you fair on it please.

Hi Bill,

So what rod are you using to cast the 200g gamma?
I only have a Monster 80h to handle my 160g gamma right now but didn't use my 200g gamma yet on my last trip but Ill use it the next time on the next variable wind.I should be okay
with the 200g gamma because i also use 220g+  poppers with the 80h.
I heard that the 200g gammas might be a little hard to work it correctly. Let me know how you fair on it please.

Hi Alex, with the utmost respect, if you have not done any popping trips yet, Gammas are not a smart place to start IMO.

It's a very tricky lure to use properly. I think you would be best off starting with some floating stick baits which are easier to use.

Gammas are superb lures but it is much better to first get used to the basics of swimming a much less demanding stick bait.

Hi Alex
I somehow did not preview my answer your question on my last post but heres is my answer to what rod I'm using.I use my 120g gamma with my Blue Lagoon 80/30 and my
160g Diablo and 200g gamma with my Monster 80H.I have not tried the 200g gamma yet but will give it a try on the next trip.Ive already caught fish on these stickball and I like it but not the price.Im interested on trying the ASWB and Siren lures later if they have any on stock.

Thanks Mark for the advise.

In Singapore, we normally practice casting and working the lure in reservoirs first although we know that the water density will be different, also not subjected to currents and waves. However that should not be too different when the sea is calm.

I have quite a few stickbaits now and seem to be working well after a little practice. Perhaps because I am doing mainly luring prior to popping so it does not seem to be that hard to work them.

 ;D

At least you are lucky to get some gamma.
In my country, its always out of stock for 120-160g.

Hi Alex

The website below should sort you out in regards to Gammas. Can be prohibitive in terms of $ but there is the odd bargain to be had.

####

Enter gamma weight i.e. 160 to narrow the search down.

Happy bidding

Andrew
