Title: Line Capacity
Post by: Sheldon Chee on August 27, 2008, 08:55:18 PM
Hi guys,

Am really new to popping and pretty much trying to get a decent setup now. However, I'd like to know how much line is needed in general for say:

Light to medium popping, PE3-6?

Medium to heavy popping, PE6-8?

The monsters, >PE8?

I know pretty much the reels are a throw up between the Stellas and 6500GT/Exp. I'd just like to know in general so that I can consider the kind of equipment for the waters available to me.

Oh, on another note what set up would you recommend for Christmas Island and the Maldives?

Appreciate any comments.

Hi Sheldon
Welcome to the forum mate.
I like my line capacities to generally be around the 300m mark on everything but when you get up to PE10-12 even the biggest reels won't hold this much, I suggest when buying new gear that you have a good idea what size line you want to run and buy a accordingly. I also firmly believe in not scrimping on the line quality to save a few bucks, the line is the only connection between you and that expensive lure your chucking at the fish.
Gear for Christmas Island I would take PE8-10,there are some big fish over there.
I can't help you with Maldives

Cheers Chris

Heyo,

Thanks mate, was figuring that it needed this much (300m).

Any idea that the Shimano Kaibutsu S8208 Long Cast PE 6-8 pair with 10000FA do any good at Christmas Island or do I need a heavier set up?

On the contrary Sheldon I got caught out yesterday on the same thing ::)
After looking at the link Zac put up you should have a great time , looks like fantastic fishing. I still think PE8-10.
I also google earthed the island .Very rugged looking, from the looks of it most of the coastline seems almost inaccessible on foot.

Cheers Chris
