Title: What do you take with you....?
Post by: Ben Furness on March 02, 2011, 03:24:49 PM
Another newbie question but a search turned up nothing to help me answer this.

What do you pack to take on your multiple day fishing trips besides the obvious rods, reels, hooks, swivels and split rings!

I am heading to Bali for 12 days during Easter for a three day boat trip as well as several single day trips (hopefully) and do not want to turn up and realise I have missed some very important items!

Thanks in advance everyone!

Fishing vitals that are easy to forget:

Gloves
Split-ring pliers and crimping pliers if you use them
A lot of leader
Spare main line in case of re-spooling (or loaded spare spools)

And:

Hat(s)
A simple medical kit

Ben, I don't go anywhere without the following - in dddition to the obvious!

1) 2 pairs of gloves (you can rotate them so you are not wearing stinky wet golves all the time)
2) Split ring pliers, preferably in a holster on the gimbal belt
3) Braid scissors
4) Lighter - for burning over the ends of knots (don't rely on smokers being on board)
5) Buff / hat (or other preffered form of sun protection) + suntan lotion.
6) Spare spools with leaders tied already to go, it's a lot quicker than re tying a leader after a bust off during a hot bite - you can do that over evening drinks.
7) A pocket pull of something sugary, like snakes or jelly beens for when you think you are about to hit the wall!

and finally

A pair of swimmers to cool off when the bite shuts down!

Cheers.

Too easy, If it wasn't for a secret agent out there, those things would be damn near impossible to get hold of.

Lets fish again!!

You sure you don't want to be A BRAND NEW CREATOR?!?! Ika Masta can always do with two Xzoga Egi rods.

Okay, I will bring durian again. This might delight everyone else on the boat.

Ben - if that is a Garua Kong then you will probably find that noone else will be able to get one of those. (Maybe only one more special release if your name was Kaiyang Cai.)

Ben - COuple things I never leave without

3 Pairs of Gloves - 2 x Casting gloves, and 1 x Heavier pair for leader/wireman work if needs be... I like really lightweight casting gloves, and nice to have two pairs to rotate as mentioned above, and I like a heavier pair for playing wire man, or grabbing big scuted tails, rough jaws etc without ripping up casting gloves... a bit OTT perhaps, but a gashed finger can ruin a trip.

Footwear - This has been discussed at length, but I'm a fan of solid quality footwear... most places I fish involve wading as well as rock work, and boat work, so a good pair of quality footwear is a must.

Good sunnies are an obvious essential, but having a back up pair is a good idea, or at the very least, a floating sunnies strap to keep them on your head.

Hat - I usually take 2 or 3 hats just in case...

Buff - Small items, again I take at least 2 with me... if one gets lost or whatever, I got a back up..

Sunscreen - I'm pretty militant about the sun, so I take Factor 50 Island Tribe gel for face ( 100% block out, completely waterproof - only needs to be applied once a day ) and P20 or similar for the rest of the body.

Lightweight shirt - I much prefer the new Airwick type shirts like the Simms Solartec, or Columbia Guide II type shirts, over traditonal fishing shirts like Columbia Bonehead etc... I like the Bonehead style shirts for flyfishing and such, cause the pockets are helpful, but for jigging/popping, the pockets are usueless, and the flaps and sleeves of the shirt just get in the way when casting and jigging in my opinion...

Ski Pants - Might sand a bit crazy, but I learnt my lesson on these... nothing can put a man down like a batch of CHRONIC chafe..... especially in hot weather, and if you are wading/trekking beaches etc.... a simple cheap pair of lycra tights ( like cycle shorts without the pad ) go a loooooong way into saving you delicate bits!!! ( These are worn UNDER your shorts/pants of course!!! 8) )

Jacket - Although most of our GT targetting locals are tropical, the weather is always unpredictable, and getting caught in a big squall can drop the temp really quickly... a lightweight high quality waterproof can save the day and keep you warm and dry when needed...

Rehydrate sachets or simialr... Most of these taste nasty, but some good ones out there... good to just have one a day for the evenings to get your salts back up, especially if you fishing super hot locales...

And last but not least, the most important, an Orion BigFoot 230 to use for chasing Garfish of course! ;)

Savage, savage cruelty there from Brandon.

This could become a list of things not to bring on a tropical fishing trip :).

Notably, things that make you sweat a lot - buffs (you gotta be kidding me - cap, sunnys and sun block), synthetic "fishing" shirts (wear a light cotton tee) and, worst of all, arm socks (itchy, sweaty and just all round very nasty things).  ;)

Greg, you caught it on video! But he was simply using the wrong lure and no garfish were around.

I was just hoping to see a BIG GT or Grouper then come up and smash it just as Brandon was turning around to talk to the camera and pull him in but oh well...  ;D ;D

No he was only trying to attract Groper there...

When Greg put the camera on him when he was Beating garfish he ran inside and put a Buff on so his face appeared blurred on camera....

He says it wasnt him.... ??? ;D ;D
