Modern alternative to Smith 80p/35?
May 27, 2015, 04:13:17 PM
The Smith 80p/35 was always described as a great beginners GT rod, not for the biggest lures or fish but a good all rounder with mid weight stickbaits and lighter poppers. Forgiving during the fight too.

However, it's a heavy rod with older technology so what would be a good modern replacement for this rod in the main brands?

Ripple Fisher
Hots
Temple Reef
Carpenter

Thanks for your ideas?

Oli,

Still a good rod though with a great reputation

If you're looking for something newer in the Hots Line up the the Gipang 79XH or the 83H if your after something a little lighter, more like the Smith.

Carpenter have 3 All-Rounder product lines. The Monster Hunters (particularly the 80H if you want to fish PE8 but it's a much bigger rod than the Smith), the Endless Passion series (KLL 82/42 for heavier, 82/38 or the 85/36 for lighter work like the Smith) and the Coral Viper series although an older model (the 79/40 for heavier and the 79/35 for lighter). Each has their own character

I'm sure others will chime in with their choices and with a run down of your other brand choices.

Regards,
