Title: Home made stickbait
Post by: Stephen Polzin on February 27, 2009, 09:45:41 PM
Well I finally decided to have a crack at making a stickbait.  It's a shameless copy of a Carpenter of course.  Fortunately I have a couple that have been torn apart by fish so was able to get the internal weights right.  Pretty happy with the result, though the wiring isn't great.  Hopefully will be able to test it out when the wind comes down again.

cheers,

steve

haha, thanks Mark but I'm a long way off mass production!

Here's another pic after a couple of clear-coats.  Unfortunately the paint on the eyeball ran (damnit!) but apart from that I'm pretty happy with the results

cheers,

steve

Thanks Pete, I've only made one at this stage.  The gold one is a genuine Carpenter and mine is the blue one.

cheers,

steve

great stuff Stephen, looks like it should tempt a few GTs. Seen it's action in the water yet?

BTW, what are you using for the clear coat? Also, are you sealing the timber prior to painting? Sorry about all the questions, but as a keen lure maker, I like to know how everyone else is making 'em! ;)

Cheers
Angus

Gday Angus,

I just used some enamel undercoat, then a couple of coats of paint, some prism tape and stole some glitter nail-polish off the missus.  For clear coat I used two part rod finish.  Blowing a gale up here at the moment but I snuck down to the Inlet and threw it around for a while.  Action looks just like a bought one so I'm pretty confident it will work.  Looking forward to some results though!

Stephen - you won't need to buy any more Carpenters going forward!

Thanks Brandon, hopefully you're right.  I've still got a few but I bought them for around $50 a pop before the exchange rate went bananas.  To me they're not worth what it would cost in Aus dollars now.

cheers,

steve

50 bucks each! Some guys would give their left testicle to get Carpenters for that price... and yes, they're still worth it at the current cost  ;D

exactly - that was a while back though. The 140 Gammas are about 6500 to 7000 JPY now - if you can get them

left testicle gone on a smith and jigstar 350g rods - wife owns the right one.... but can spare a lung ,kidney - non smoker/drinker .go to a guy that does sighn writing -boat decals etc .get him to cut you eyes out of offcut exterior vynal- same stuff they use for car/boat names etc .cut a 6mm black dot  with a 4mm white dot in centre costs me a few cents for a hundred each.works great , is fast and cheap.if he has reflective tape get him to cut side panels for you as well ,its all done on camputer so any shape can be done. WELL DONE !!!
